Singer John Lennon is shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside his apartment building in New York City. After committing the murder, Chapman waited calmly outside, reading a copy of The Catcher in the Rye.

Chapman was a troubled individual who was obsessed with Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of J. D. Salinger's novel about a disaffected youth, and with various celebrities. While working as a security guard in Hawaii, he decided that Lennon was a phony and, while listening to Beatles tapes (often at the wrong speed), Chapman decided to plan his murder.

Chapman purchased a gun in Hawaii and then traveled to New York to stay in the Hotel Olcott on Central Park West. Although he called his wife to tell her that he was in New York to shoot Lennon, she ignored his threats. Unable to buy bullets in New York due to strict laws, Chapman flew to Atlanta and purchased hollow-nosed rounds to bring back.

1941 - The United States entered World War II when it declared war against Japan. The act came one day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Britain and Canada also declared war on Japan.

Yeah, uh, personally, I thought the above event is the biggest event that has happened on this day in history in the US.

As for clicking on it, one really wouldn't know the subject matter from the title.
As for crapping in it, that's a subjective call.

hahaha! :)

By the way, the "joke" wasn't meant to be insulting I think, so ease off on it people... gay people exist and people CAN make JOKES about them without insulting them. It's like women - sure, equality, OK that's great.. but that doesn't mean they get all these extra special rights just cause they're women, equal means equal! Same idea with gays... treat 'em like any other person - which includes poking fun at them. Gay man! :p no harm intended, get it?

Maybe you should change the title from "Today in History" to "Today in Homosexuality".

How come we never see any "this day in Heterosexual" posts? Everybody's got cause working for them. That is, except for the Straight, white, Male. We are now the only minority in this country.

Well, I guess we know who the butch in YOUR relationship is.

I consider John Lennon's death important - and tragic. And maybe that Carnegie Hall thing is important too, but the fact that you totally ignored Pearl Harbor makes me shake my head in disgust. Considering the fact that the US declaration of war in 1941 was perhaps the pivotal moment in this century, I think the death of a celebrity and a few dancing men is moot by way of comparison.
