Illinois entered the Union on December 3, 1818. The 21st state takes its name from the Illinois Confederation--a group of Algonquian-speaking tribes native to the area. An Algonquin word, "Illinois" means "tribe of superior men."

On December 3rd, 1621, the Italian astronomer Galileo invented the first practical telescope which lead to his amazingly precise astronomical observations. Often called the father of modern astronomy, Galileo was made to recant his heretical theory that the earth and other planets revolved around the sun when called before a Papal Inquisition in 1633. However, he and his proof of the Copernican scheme were both vindicated and accepted by the end of the seventeenth century.

Galileo Galilei
Astronomer and Physicist

1564 -1642

I do not feel obliged to believe that the the
same god who has endowed us with sense, reason
and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

ROFL, come on man, he's just trying to add a bit of trivia to the AT boards. I don't know why the mods locked it, it's not really a nef thread. :)

December 3rd, 1896 - Hermann Hollerith incorporated the Tabulating Machine Company on this day in 1896. At age twenty-nine, Hollerith, who had worked at the Census Bureau in 1880, won a competition to develop the most efficient counting system for the 1890 census. His tabulating machine counted punched cards, inspired by a card system developed by Joseph Jacquard of France to program patterns into textile looms. Through a series of mergers and reorganizations, the Tabulating Machine Company eventually became IBM.

<< December 3, 2002...crystalcrescent will probably be here, posting in a "nef" thread like this one, hopelessly addicted to Off Topic like the rest of you animals :D

...and what's wrong with homosexuality posts here? Am I missing something?
>>

Just that of EE's 66 posts, 64 or so of them have been about homosexuals. While I have no qualms with homosexuality, I don't want it crammed down my throat either which is the case here.
