Alright, here goes nothing.

I have been working for a local city hall for some time now, I'm sure some of you know this by now and know of my rants and of that "cute secretary" (ill provide a pic maybe later) that once worked here. But I''m starting to reach the end point of this place. My sanity has been lost in this job, all my ambition and passion has also gone with it. To get an idea, for those that don't know what I do, let me explain a bit more.

I am known as a "Permit System Technician" (i heard someone in the back say "whats that?"). Every city hall has a system or systems that maintain and operate the cities permits (ie: electrical permit, building permit, plumbing permits, etc) It gets a little complicated as to the process of actually applying for a permit. Internally there are lots of routing involved and signing off type deals. All these details were handled by a program called 'Permit Plus' which is part of the Accela Corporation. But here was my task. When I arrived at this place, the city has been using the old DOS version of this program which is years old. My duty was to "upgrade" everything onto a new Windows 32-bit program (even this isn't as good as the DOS). When I applied for this job last year in November, the job "tasks" read as follows: Graphic Design Intern strangely enough I haven't done jack crap with Graphic Design, but what really attracted me to this job was its pay. Being 19 years of age at the moment $15.03 / hr was one hell of a wage. So I applied.

Biggest mistake of my life.

Here is how my sanity got lost. First off this place is a government based job, where money ALWAYS comes in and certain tasks are sometimes overlooked and neglected. I am that task. I mentioned MONEY because this place doesn't have the fear of losing MONEY when certain tasks or jobs aren't being compelted, MONEY is always being inputted.

I have been neglected for months now. WHY THE HELL DO YOU THINK MY POST HER DAY # IS UP TO THE 20's!!! Everyday I come in, and I basically do what I do if I were at my own apt, which is surf the web and work on my own things! Why? because I didn't have anything to work WITH. Sure I know what needs to be done, but without guidance or a exact direction, I'm lost. Its hard to explain exactly what I mean but I hope you got the idea. My boss is NEVER there for me to go and ask "umm, what exactly is it that you want?" He takes 1-2 hour lunches, is always in some meeting, or on the phone. I have talked to him several times already indicating to him that I can't do what I'm suppose to with no "info" And now he wants me to continue working on the future web site? hellll no. He has provided me with nothing, not even content! "well we have the structure of the site so we can input everything else later on" sure that sounds fair but its not the most effective way in doing a site! PLUS, he treates me like I dont know sh|T.

Every suggestion I give, he turns it down. I'm sorry but I have lots more web experience and design experience then he does and he is telling me howwww this city site should look. I understand to a certain point, but if all my suggestions in making the site look "better" are turned down, it can get to me. Government sites are so plain, and I just wanted to add a small (very small) taste to the site and he's like "no, that makes it look too commercial"

Gosh I feel strange sharing this all to you, knowing that most probably could careless, but i figured I dont know you, you dont know me, so maybe this is just an interesting read for some. After all these months being here, I have decided that today will be my last day.

Even though I have 2 more months left on my lease, I'm quitting anyway. I'm broke as hell but I #$%^& can't take this place anymore. TODAY I SHALL QUIT MY JOB!!!!!!!!

and if a co-worker of mine is reading this, GOOD, inform my boss, that way I can leave right now!

I'm 20 years old now, soon to be 21 and I shouldn't be going through this crap especially with college! I figured I'll have so many oppotunities ahead of me. Good RIDANCE!

danny~!

Congrats, quitting is fun.

But everything you described is what you will deal with for the rest of your life.

Learn to deal with it, or learn to deal with rubber walls.

DO NOT BURN BRIDGES... no matter what, there is always a *possibility*, however slight, that it could come back to haunt you. You can tell them why you're leaving, but try not to be overly harsh or launch into a tirade.

Other than that, good luck. :)

this reminds me of a job that i had at a divorce law firm as a paralegal.
a terrible experience.

day after day... i would hear of these ladies coming in to file a divorce on their husbands.
how the guys would cheat on them... mental, physical, sexual abuse...
the list goes on.

to make situations worse... the lawyers... the scums of the earth...
would charge these ladies for everything she's got... and he's got.

and at the end of the day... the lawyers would sit down together...
and say to eachother how their work has been so fulfilling...
helping other people in desperate need.

gosh... at $275/hour... you're not helping anyone.

i remember one time... one of the lawyers cousin was filing for divorce...
and he gave her a family&friends discount... a discounted rate of $225/hour. woo-hoo~

:) i couldn't stand it.
so i quit after 4 weeks.

made good money... but not worth the headache.

You're getting paid $15 an hour to screw around surfing the web, and you're going to quit? Hell, for most of the kids that hang out here that would be their DREAM job.

You will likely find that there is some level of BS in all jobs...

Only you can know if you are doing the right thing.

However, my thoughts are, if you

1 - Like the money

2 - Don't exhaust yourself mentally or physically there

3 - Have structured, convenient working hours

man, you got it made there. There are many many people who are in a much worse situation than you are. I would not quit because of the problems you listed, because those are everywhere. I would only quit after finding and accepting a position somewhere else because it is a better job.

Good Luck regardless!

Russ and antos351, i agree, BUT... it's not exactly how it seems. just trust me on this. Have you guys worked for a governement job? just take my word for it.

In fact, this entire summer, I stayed only for the money, but now i don't even care about the money. money can't be the driven force here especially when I'm losing so much with more value: myself

I understand where danny is coming from..it is an unfulfilling job. Even though he gets paid to do nothing it doesn't give him any satisfaction.

He should go find a job that challenges him ,and provide experiences that he can learn from.

I've been there! It might sound like a gravy job and for some people it might be, but if I have a job where I'm bored and have nothing to do, I get crazy. The days drag on without end. I at least have to be busy or I'm going nuts...it doens't matter what the pay is...if I can't stand it, I can't stay...

777php,

Actually, I completely understand why he's leaving; I have done the same in the past. I was just pointing out that for most kids it's what they would consider the perfect situation. In other words, I was tossing him a back-handed compliment of his ethical standards.

I worked a govt. job. I did programming for them. And yes everything does move SLOW! And things go according to procedure, and there is the paper work shuffle.

But, it gives me the appreciation for slowing down and going with the flow. It opened my eyes to a world of employment out there.
Prime example: They gave me a pentium60 with 128megs of ram, 9gig SCSI drive and some more ghetto equipment. I was to use this for programming c++ and converting it into MDL. The machine was noramally used for transferring FAA documents from the research lab I was at.
The system eventually became unstable (go figure) and had to be backed up and reinstalled. I told them I could do that in 1 day. Drop the files on a network drive, wipe the system, reinstall, copy files back over and bam its done.
Nope, they would not have that, so it had to go through the whole process, of tape backup, bring it to the specalists and back again. This task was not completed by the time I left that lab.
But then again, danny, your balls are all fired up and your ready to take on the world.

Your job is actually kinda kick ass for 15bucks an hour.

no it's not. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to explain or send out my "feel" of what i do. You simply have to be where I am now to FULLY understand. I can't be at a slow paced job, when I want something done, I want it done right there and then. But here, the time conversion is different from Wingdoggs on his last rant.

in regards to getting some content:

"Oh, I'll have to work on it, give me some time" = weeks, maybe a month

and what do i do in that time, nothing. sit around, and di|ck around. I'm sorry but I can't be treated like this. I can't be put aside and then later on retreive when they are ready. Then, they scream at me when things are not done, WHEN I HAD NO CONTROL OF IT BEING DONE.

urgg. if I was on the phone with you I would explain in much detail but I'm limited here of course. The day is coming to an end here in the working world. 3:12, I leave at 5:30 forever

In the business world when this happens people generally use the paid time and free resources to start their own sub-contracting business. Anyway I'd most likely use the time to do little side projects, when I leave the office for extended periods of time and say I was gathering material for the web site.

Maetryx here,

I had a job with the BLM for a while. I totally took the short walk goodbye. Nothing was ever accomplished in that beauracratic wasteland. I would spend weeks working on a 3-d model in a civil engineering application just to design a silly-ass 1.5 mile gravel road. Then they bought new software and scrapped my progress.

Then they flew a out-of-state BLM guy up to train us on the new software, which he accomplished in approximately 4 hours. But they kept him up there the entire summer, paying him an ungodly amount of per diem on top of his wages.

There was a flexible work schedule in place which meant you could work up to 11.5 hours in one day, and thus only show up 3.5 days a week. Well, everyone CLAIMED on their timesheets that is what they did. One woman would show up and 6AM and put her head down on the desk and go to sleep. One guy played Mah Jonng all day, but didn't actually PLAY it, he just ran it in auto-solve and watched it.

Three women would load up into the GSA provided mini-van to go get the mail. They would smoke their lips off in the van so no one else would use it. So a brand new minivan was used only for retrieving the mail. One guy that worked there was so braindead he couldn't even put together a sentence. He would just stare at you and repeat whatever you said back at you with a question mark on the end.

"Hey, man, I haven't seen you in a while."
(mumbling) "Haven't seen me in a while?"
"Well, yeah, I've been out for a week."
(mumbling) "You've been out for a week?"
"Didn't you hear? I cut my own head off with a chainsaw."
(mumbling) "You cut your head off with a chainsaw?"

Anyway, it was also $15/hour, and it had Federal benefits, but fsck that. I just stopped showing up. They decided that the funding had run out for the position and layed me off, which was funny because I wasn't even showing up any more.
