This is the first time for me with living in the woods and seeing them all up close. I love it.

rickn - There's no huntin' here, legally anyway. I'll hear something that sounds like a gun maybe once every few months or so, but it's a rarity.

Dave - When my mom was growing up, they used to eat venison all the time. I don't think I've ever tried it and don't really want to. I've eaten rabbit, though, when I was like 8 or something. It tasted like chicken to me. I have an uncle that used to go to Colorado every year to hunt (I don't know if he still does or not.) and he got a deer and one night my aunt made "hamburgers" and later told the kids they ate "Bambi Burgers". LOL

Out that way legal does not always matter. They used to (and still may for all I know) close Skyline at night during this time of year because the locals would go up there and spotlight hunt deer. :(

Then I guess you don't know how to prepare it properly or you are going to the wrong butcher.

Deer are a nuisance and they really don't have many natural predators around anymore. At least in midwest. If you go out at night to shine deer you can see packs well over a hundred. You also have to be very sharp when driving at night because they like to pop out.

I grew up in the country. I hated it. Nothing to do.

I also wish deer hunting season was longer because their population is just completely out of control.

You should live in Western NY... deer population is incredibly low right now..
This follows several years of record harvests. It took the DEC a few years to figure out how low the population was getting. Last year, I could legally take 8 deer. Now, after spotlighting the last few nights, I'm up to having seen a total of 3 deer in my area. (although, I do see them occasionally during the day too.)

I'm hoping one will walk up to me this weekend :) Mmmmm venison. 2 weeks into bow season and I haven't had a chance to get out yet.

Oh, btw, feeding deer is illegal in NY, so I can't do what the OP is doing and post pics. (Although, I have plenty of pics from last winter.. didn't want them to starve to death during the bad winter.)
Note: I would never shoot a deer that was baited in. Or any other animal. That's not fair chase, and the states that allow that (especially for bear) really need to change their laws.

I love deer, and hearing that you're feeling good enough to be outside, but frankly I don't like people feeding wildlife. It does nothing but cause dependency (and make people feel better about themselves for helping 'poor' animals).

I've seen too many deers euthanized here in town because they've become nuisances around people's yards, and one of the habituated ones even charged a young child, injuring her. I don't mind losing my flowers to deer in my yard, but when they come looking for handouts, and become aggressive when they don't get them it can be a problem.

Keep taking the pics though! And show your SO how to focus the camera like you do ;)

LOL Thanks. TONS of people here on the mountain feed the deer. That's how I heard about it. I didn't even know about deer corn before that.

Tim sometimes takes good pics and sometimes he doesn't. (Just like me. lol) We really need to learn how to work our digital camera and the new camcorder we just got. I would love to be able to take great pics.

Good enough to be outside....lol Well, I called Tim earlier and said something along the lines of, "Yeah, feeding the deer outside when it's about 34 degrees outside and in the middle of a flare up...not a good idea!". It made the pain worse today, but I just love to see the deer. I do feel somewhat better, though. I went to the pain clinic yesterday and we're trying to rotate medicines. For instance...I'll take one kind of muscle relaxant one week and the other the next week. So, it's helping a little today. :)

Linflas - I think they close Skyline at dusk, but I could be wrong. I know they have campsites along the drive... I'd have to ask Tim. He likes to hike up there (I've gone on one easy one with him.), so he would probably know. All of us over here should meet up sometimes. I went out a little earlier again and there were 14 there in the back yard. :D
