Just came back from Best Buy where I picked up a Buslink retail 16X DVD drive for $19.95 AR ($59.99 - 20 rebate - 20 rebate= $19.99). The double rebate is a nuisance but can't complain for the price. The box says it is a model "DR16". Haven't opened it yet, but hope is that this is merely a rebranded Lite-On. Does anyone know for sure?

Doesn't matter if it's a liteon or not. If it works, it works. Liteon has no real advantage in the DVD-ROM market, although, in my experince, Liteons DVD-ROMs tend to be a bit louder then some other drives.

I won't have time to open it until I get home this evening. The reason for the preference for the Lite-On was they have very good DAE performance...and, yes, I was thinking of returning it if it wasn't.

I stopped by and picked up one of these on the way home from work. Label on the drive itself indicates "Universal Buslink Corporation DVD-ROM Drive" with model number LTD-163. LTD-163 is the part number for LiteOn's 16x DVD-ROM drive, so this appears to be a LiteOn. One thing to mention is that my two LiteOn-branded 16x LTD-163 DVD-ROM drives have both eject and play buttons on the front panel, but this drive only has the eject button. Included in the package is PowerDVD XP (with CD-Key included), 1 IDE cable, 1 analog CD Audio cable, mounting screws, and installation guide.

E.

EDIT: Oh, be sure and check the thread that allisolm mentioned.

allisolm and all,

Thanks for the info and especially appreciate the lack of flaming for a repost. Prior to posting, did a quick scan for buslink but didn't see yours, allisolm. Yep, nice drive for the money, even if it is a double rebate hassle. Exactly what I wanted.

Sweet deal... picked mine up last night. Mine also appear to be a Lite-On LTD-163 with only an eject button like MisterE's. Both rebates in the mail... thanks allisolm and Mac!!

looks like good deal - only problem is that my chair at the computer is not as comfortable as the couch in front of the TV
