"To Zalman or not to Zalman..."

I bought a GeCube X1950Pro and it comes with a stock heatsink thats quite big and covers most of the card. the card is working fine so far, but i didnt see any conclusive thermal readings so i'll have to find those out first.

In any case, I also recieved a VF-700Cu as a gift and its sitting still in package on my shelf.
question is, will it perform better than the stock heatsink?
This isnt the most high-end zalman VGA coolers, plus i'll void my warrently if i take off the stock heatsink...

i've read some reviews and as expected the difference wasnt that great temprature-wise.
and i dont plan on OCing the card, i just want to keep my computer as cool as possible.

what do you think i should do?

P.S. anyone knows a good light-weight CPU HSF with no backplate?

P.P.S installing the Intel stock HSF was a horrifying experience! the person who designed those clips should be shot at the town square and left for the pigeons to poop on!

the vf900 is the only one I'd consider on a X1900 series card, and definitely not the vf700.

Freezer 7 pro should work for your CPU OK. Still uses those gay pushpins but whatever (would you believe that they use them for the scythe infinity too?!?!)

Depends on what review you look at, and the case airflow. If there is decent enough airflow in the case it works ok but not stellar. That's why I said I'd consider, didn't say I'd do it.

If the OP wants to drop temps, get the Gigabyte V-power or (even better) the Thermalright HR-03.

the vf700 cu dropped temps by 10-15C at the lowest fan speed setting on my 7800gt...i really doubt it would perform WORSE than the stocker. just try it. you can always replace the stock hsf with just a few screws 🙂

No, it definitely wouldn't cool better. I assume you have this?

I recall at the Rage3D forum how the Zalman heatsinks actually caused higher end (and hotter) Radeon cards to overheat.

You are irther very misinformed or one demensional!
It`s okay to pick and choose sites that support your statement.
But to ignore all the rest of the sites that do not support your statement is well...you know...not cool!

To the OP--Most after market video coolers are better than the ones that are on the video card!

I am currently using the Zaman V900 but I would use the v700 if it was a gift!

Tha cooler that comes with that particular card will becomes loud a few months down the line and you will be very happy that you installed an after market cooler on your card!!

As long as your not going to over clock your CPU I see no reason to not use the AC 7 pro!!

Good Luck!!

For whatever it's worth I put the v700 on my 7900GS and it helped temps quite a bit. But, the stock cooler is pretty puny. I went from mid 60's under load to upper 40's.

One of the other guys alluded to it...the vf700 is an excellent performer as long as there's decent airflow in the case. If not, it chokes on it's own heat.

As long as you have a fairly effective intake/exhaust setup you'll be fine. If, however, you just have one fan on the back of the case or a similar setup, you may want to at least add an intake fan.

Case airflow won't matter. The X1900 series run quite hot. Airflow will make no difference on direct cooling of the GPU. The Zalman heatsinks just aren't a proper design for cooling those video cards.

LOL! I hope you know what Rage3D is. I'm not talking about any review. I'm talking about their forums that have users that mainly own ATi powered video cards. They have a section called "ATI Radeon Tweaking, Modding, and Overclocking" where people post regularly about overclocking and even using aftermarket heatsink solutions.

Numerous people reported that the VF700 and VF900 were horrible solutions for their video card. They stated that idle temps were great but once you started gaming for an extended period of time the card would overheat.

A far better solution would be a Thermaltake TMG-AT2.

http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-tmg-at2-cooler.html

I put a Thermaltake TMG-AT1 on my X1900XT and it dropping idle temps by 15C and load temps by 25C. Not to mention it features DHES and is nearly silent.

stop and think what you just said......
here let me fix it for you and see if you agree...

Actually cade airflow always matters!
If there is no airflow around the video card and nothing expelling the hotair out of the case then you are screwed!

If you have air being expelled out of the case...which would indicate you have proper air management inside the case your video car will run coole even if it also has a cooler on it that expells air itself out of the case!

This just very basic case airflow management!

Peace!

Come on now.......

GPU core cooling...you think that case airflow matters? I have an Antec Nine Hundred and my GPU temp varies very little if I turn off every fan in my case.

Sorry what you are not adding into thios equation is that with no airflow the over all card will run hotter even though your temp probe might pick it up.

yet common sense in a not to common world says that any type of airflow is better than none....novel concept huh?
