I spent about three months getting to level 60 in WoW, playing about 20 hours a week. By the time I finally hit the top level, I was totally sick of the game and was happy to leave.

These guys are right, though.... Nothing that you do in that game is remotely meaningful. Sure, you get some cool weapons and armor from killing all the boss monsters, but they always respawn just a few minutes later. It makes you wonder after awhile... what's the point in playing a game that you can NEVER win?

Its the human interaction that makes it different. Playing with a group of friends/ guildmates makes the whole thing much more enjoyable. Sure the monsters respawn, that just means you can take them down again and when you get bored with that one you move on to a different one. Thats one thing that I do like that Blizz has done is add more content instead of simply waiting for an expansion pack. There have been at least 3 different content increases since i started playing early last year.

I am totally down with coughing up the $15 a month. All in all, it's cheap entertainment. It costs two people maybe $20 to go to the movies for one night, and I get far more enjoyment out of my $15 spread over a full month. I watch way less television, and don't need to pay a lot for a billion movie channels. It is totally worth every dime to me.

I bought Wow last November,
I haven't spent a dime on any other games since then. I quit WoW last april and resumed in August.
I also have a 50 user teamspeak server that I use exclusivly for WoW. It runs about 13 bucks per month, so it's not so bad.

It costs less then buying one regular game per month. I'm having a lot more fun with WoW then I would be picking up any other games and playing them.

You say yourself later in your post that you find yourself chatting more than playing, your paying a monthly subscription to be in a virtual chatroom and make e-friends, doesn't that seem like money wasted to you?

I think you do that everytime you use the internet though. Next people will be bring up how much broadband costs over dialup when its the *same* internet. Or cable/satellite compared to using bunny ears. If you expect more from a service, just be willing to spend for those extras. I sold guildwars because it wasn't the kind of game that suited my tastes. Though most people may not like it, you *can* turn around a high end rpg account and make everything you've paid for and then some. Whether or not people like it, the market exists.

LMAO. Go to the software forum where people are bitching about EA's $10 booster packs for BF2. I didn't do WOW just because of the $150/yr pricing...

If you play regulary, it's still one of the cheaper forms of entertainment/hour, even at $50+15/mo. It's pennies/hour, compare that to "traditional" forms of entertainment like going to a movie, watching a DVD, happy hour, going out to diner, watching a sporting event, etc, which are measured in dollars/hour.

I don't play WoW or any other MMORPG currently, but I usually spend 10-20 hours a week playing Counter Strike 😱. Accoring to Xfire, I have played 630 hours since I installed Xfire.

For those who enjoy playing the game, the $15 seems well worth it considering the amount of gameplay you can have in a month. I started an account last year, and pretty much got sucked into the game big time. I have since canceled my account after reaching the end game and realizing how much time I was wasting. Yet, I still think it had a great amount of enjoyment per dollar spent.

MMORPGs suck. grind grind grind. it's like paying money for a second job, at least that's what it felt like after a few months of EVE

MMORPGs cost money to maintain. Guild Wars is not a MMORPG.

Guild Wars is an MMO in term of finances, it has to put up with every financial burden any other MMO was. if you were speaking in terms of gameplay I'd give you more lenience, but in terms of money it is equal to all its counterparts.

Hardly. It's all divided up to save money. In towns (chat rooms) there isn't any combat and some items aren't visible. Yes there can be lots of people there, but that's because nothing happens in town apart from chat and trading. If you want to partake in combat you have to get in an instance.
GW has some maintence costs, but not nearly as much as a MMORPG that is a true world. Do you think they'd be able to get away with a $0 monthly fee if it had significant costs to maintain?

I dont feel like Im wasting any time on WoW. Its either WoW, irc, checking webpages and TV. They are all basicly wasting time, WoW is just the method I enjoy the most. If I have things do, I do them and WoW can wait... Some 280 hours and counting...

Agnostos Insania: Yes I believe they could easily maintain their $0 monthly fee, this idea that MMO's cost tons of money to maintain is total fallacy, GW is proof of this.

What this thread needs is a picture of fat Sally Struthers begging you to spend the money on starving children instead 🙂

But seriously. I'm all for subscriptions if they can provide you with a well supported game you like at a reasonable rate. Lord knows every shooter I play online is lacking in effective administration and cheat protection, and often in decent servers.

There's been nothing out yet that has been worth it to me, but I salute you brave pioneers whose payments entice the industry to keep advancing 😉
