to you waiters/waitresses...

do people generally leave a flat 14%, round up to the nearest dollar so they dont have to break to change, or just stiff ya?

😕???? have you ever been out to a restaurant or a bar? do you always make sure to leave a 14% tip? well, like all things, it varies from person to person and the kind of service you get.

i'm not afraid to leave my $0.02 if that's what the ass deserved, but i'll also drop upwards of a 25% tip if the service was that great.

Where did 14% come from? The standard is 15%.

Unless the service is offensive, you should always leave at least 15% - waiters/waitresses pay taxes based on the food bill regardless if there is a tip or not. Plus they make less than minimum wage, they depend on tips for their income.

My rule of thumb is $1 for every $10 worth of food. I leave a minimum of a $5 tip, and will usually round up. An extra tip is given if A) the service was very good, and B) If someone in my party was very rude to the server.

DO you know what I am getting sick and tired of? No? Well I'll tell you.
I am sick and tired of them asking if I want change when I pay. What a presumptuous POS! Take the tray with my money and bring me my change. If I am not here when you get back or leave it on the table when I leave, it's yours.

Some girl in Reno asked me that - the bill was like $9 and I put a 20 on there -- I said "HELL YES!" My boyfriend was sorta mad that I was snotty, but, there's no way I'd leave an 11 buck tip for a waitress who I never saw again after she brought my food to me.

The standard is 15%, if I get bad service, I might not leave that... if I get good service, I'll leave up to 25% sometimes.

that's BS! waiters/watresses do not make less than minimum wage, at least not in SoCal.

I fall into the "have to pay 25%+ at outback because my friend works there and we get comped food" group. Sometimes he tries to pull that s#it at other restaurants.

In high school my gf was a waitress at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe. I used to go in and eat a steak dinner and she would charge me for a salad.

when i go to restaurants and have friends who wait on my table, when im done, they tell them to help clear the table and clean up for them. (i used to work food service) so, i dont tip them or ill tell em next time ill get them something when we go out to eat. so, when it comes to friends, they get zilch! 😉

it iced up here in Austin overnight from Monday-Tuesday. Monday night it was sleeting and we ordered a pizza. We gave the guy a 30-something% tip. He was happy.

Otherwise, tax in Texas is 8.25%, so for tip I (and a lot of other people) just double that number. If it's worse, leave less. If it was exceptional, leave a little more. Simple enough.

If it's horrific, leave $0.01 just to make a point.

I'm always nice with tipping.

I have to make up for people who feel the need to stiff waiters/waitresses. I try to leave at least 15%, usually more like 20. Like last night at Applebee's, my order was like 9.60 something and I left a $3 tip. I think it's not right unless you leave at least $2 if you have more than a $5 order. That's just me though.

If I have to cough up a couple of measly bucks to make somebody feel a little better, I think it's worth it.

maybe that's why you're wealthy? 🙂 you definitely are cheap, but to each his own. heheh
on 30 I'd leave $5 if the service was good. And I don't take things like poorly prepaired food on the waitress, I only hold them responsible for their job, service

Same here, if the service is above the norm , the server is going to get a nice tip. But if its crappy and rude, they are going hear it.

i'm not exactly sure if this is true, but i do know that waiters/waitresses must report their tips for tax reasons. uncle sam may have taken it a step further but i highly doubt that.

Yeah, I knew that they had to pay taxes on their tips, but I don't understand what this guy is saying about waiters paying taxes on the customers food bills.

This is how is used to be done. I can't say for sure that it still is.
Servers run each order thru a machine like a cash register. It tracks their total sales based on their ID number. Of those total sales, 7% is deducted for Uncle Sam. It is being assumed they are being tipped. When they do taxes, they are supposed to report the difference between that 7% and what they actually made.
