To wait, or not to wait.

I'm running an old 1.4GHz P4 and an upgrade is desperately needed. You know you have a problem when your notebook drastically ooutperforms your desktop in all aspects! Anyway, I have been waiting ages for the AM2 release, only to find out that Conroe will be stealing the thunder. Then the Pentium D 805 pops up and looks to be a good processor at an unbeatable price.

Should I wait for the Conroe (and live everyday in agony), or buy an 805 as a permanent/temporary solution?

This also brings up the question, are there any 805/Conroe compatible motherboards out there for a decent price? Most are existing boards with revisions, are any new one supposed to be popping up? HOW LONG AM I EXPECTED TO WAIT? *cries*.

Don't get the 805 unless you get the Fry's electronics combo deal. They've had the retail boxed 805 with ecs board for as low as $140. It uses ddr2, which will work with conroe or am2. It may also have onboard video. I can't recommend anything else except waiting for conroe, which may be expensive in the beginning. The low end versions of new cpus can take longer to appear than the high end stuff. I hope via will come out with some funky chipset that lets me use regular pc3200 and agp with conroe, but that's a longshot. Biostar has already announced a similar via board for am2.

No. They haven't had it for about 1 week. It's only available at Fry's stores. I haven't seen the 805 combo at outpost.com, Fry's website.
