To upgrade or not to upgrade?

I currently have a Q6600 @ 3.2GHz. I was wondering if it is at all beneficial to upgrade to a Q9550, (hopefully getting a E0 stepping). Would E0 stepping allow for a better overclock? (Ideally 3.6GHz+)

I'd be very surprised if you gained a meaningful performance gain from doing that. Just wait for Nehalem?

Well, even if Nehalem does come out, I don't think I will be first to jump ship, I'll probably wait until 2nd revision (which would be probably summer of 2009) before I switch platforms.

Haha, well I'm not really focused on gaming, more or less I am wondering about photo processing/video processing. I'm more interested in SSE4.

And you can't squeeze more out of that Q6600? I find it hard to believe.

Well, I probably can, but not without hitting 1.4v. And I'm currently more interested in SSE4 extensions.

I don't know. I'd push that quad higher and wait. It doesn't really makes sense to upgrade from a quad at 3.2 ghz to another quad at maybe 3.6 ghz.

I mean I did some stupid upgrades myself, like switching from a 3800+ X2 to a 4000+ X2 and is just worthless. My oc went up from 2,6 ghz to 2,9 ghz. I see yourself in the same situation. Of course the SSE4 speed bump in video encoding is pretty important, but not that important.

Do not take the upgrade path! Just wait...... :)
