To those who think RC5-64 is a "worthless" cause...

Does everything you do on your computer have any "worthwhile" cause. When you waste your CPU cycles running Q3....you're definetly contributing to society, right? It's not worthless, it's utitilization of your cpu cycles. If you like it, then it's not a worthless cause. What purpose does Q3 hold? It appears to me that such games only drive the video card prices through the roof.
On multiple occasions I've heard people say, "might as well run Seti@home." Why? So we find a radio single from some alien nation. Now what? ---You could look forward to getting your anus probed sooner? I like the idea of aliens, but $1000 could be more useful to me than knowing "they're out there."

Maybe cause its fun....No offence to RC5 crackers, but cracking RC5 is nothing compared to playing a game of Deus Ex, or Q3A for that matter...

Also, I agree with Red Dawn on this one. If we have a computer, do we have to crack RC5...People are shoving this down our throats- give it a rest!

How about playing those games and cracking at the same time? Having fun and helping Team Anandtech? Cracking RC5 won't run your fun....it's not like the distributed client will pop up out of nowhere while you're in a fragfest...

I'm sure most people on Team Anandtech do more with their computers than just crack...so don't think that cracking is a chore or something.

Absolutely. We post these annoying threads periodically to try and attract some of the new visitors, it's regretful the old timers must endure them over and over. Hopefully we include a reference to RC5/Seti in the thread title so the veterans can just pass it by...

The Q3 example is my whole point... Just like Q3 might not serve any purpose but to be &quot;fun&quot;, the same thing is for many people who participate in RC5-64.

i am actually running it ~1000blocks per day also ;p (might not be great stats tho but i am happy with them) i dont know why i am doing it but i personally dislike the idea of it.

but lets be open mind and lets hear about it
i used to argue over it but Anandtech guys are so ignorant that they will reject any negetive comments about it and i have stopped making them
but lets have them again (one more time ;p)

it seems to me that members of TA, actually cares about the stats more than anything, they run the program for 24hours, and then wait til the next day, and looks at the stats like the stockmarket, for a few minutes... and its done am i correct? members of TA
members of TA dont think how useful cracking RC5 is... since most of them KNOW that the reason behind it is redicous. we know that WE created RC5, we KNOW how much time it takes to test per key, and we know how many keys there are... one simple maths can calculate the maximum time it takes to crack the RC5. There is no need to do the actual crack... it is unnecessary.

but why we still do it?
this thing is SO BIG and so 'into members of TA's mind'that it is impossible to stop... it is members of TA's pasttime to run Rc5, keeping RC5 running to members of TA is like their 'mental food'... it is what holds members of TA together

Sounds like letting your car run all night so you can watch the gasoline supply levels go down and the prices go up, not to mention having to replace the motor sooner.
