To those who own guns. What's the attraction?

I realize that this is sensitive ground and I don't mean to start a flame war, though perhaps one is inevitable for a topic like this. Anyway I'd seriously like to know, no politics, no agenda, no slant intended. As someone who has grown up in a household that is gunless and has no interest in them I'm curious. What is the attraction for you?

I, too, grew up in a house with no guns, and no interest in them.

But they are indeed useful tools. For self defense - both of you, or your livestock, property. They can get you food. Very useful thing to have, overall.

I shot a handgun for the first time in my life this past fall, when I was 29. It felt good to know that I now know (vaguely) how to use one if I ever needed to. I plan to eventually buy one, and practice on a regular basis, for the same reason. I don't see the need to have an entire arsenal, but I do think it's a very sensible thing to know how to handle. As has been said a million times, it's better to have one and never need it, than the opposite.

They kickass and are fun, and useful

This. I've grown up around guns and know the risks of owning one. I don't think I would ever use one against a human.

However, using a gun for sports is really pretty fun (hunting, shooting clay pigeons, or even just shooting tin cans.)

Why is it fun? Why does it have appeal? I don't know. Why do people love watching sports on TV? What is the appeal there?

You can't always just read about something and find the appeal in it.

they do what their function is, firing projectiles.

it is up to the user, what the intent for use is.

I've never even see a real gun.

Except attached to a cop. Never seen one up close, let alone held one.

Same here

Closest I've come is my history teacher brought an antique gun to school once that I think dated back 150 years or so. No way that thing could have fired, looked like it was about to fall apart.

Yeah, it's nice knowing I won't be getting shot. Ever.

I know it's too late to change things in the States, but damn, their gun ownership is some crazy shit.

No gun in my house growing up but I had a couple buddies have guns. I went shooting with them a long time ago........... .45, 9mm, .22 rifle & pistol, AK47 (yes in Canada) and .308 rifle.

I have no desire to own one until the zombies start coming after me ^_^

Cheers,

I'd like to also add all these points to my response. I think it just appeals to a certain type of person. I could not stop grinning after my first outing with the pistol. From being able to wield that kind of power, to the satisfaction of hitting a target. A little later, I tried my hand at skeet-shooting. Also very satisfying to watch the pigeon explode.

In the same year, I picked up motorcycling and shooting. I'm still not sure which hobby is more polarizing.

I've never been a gun guy. I've shot them as a teenager, but never really got the appeal. Last week I was eating and a guy sat next to me openly carrying. The gun was pointed straight at me. It was a little weird feeling.

That guy wasn't properly handling his gun and should have had it taken away from him. You NEVER point a gun at something you don't want to destroy, end of story.

He was sitting down and adjusted it towards his belly, moving it from his side. I think he didn't want it to be noticed, even though he was openly carrying.

I own a gun, its a hunting rifle and is used as such. Im in canada. I would love to own a pistol as well but gun control laws up here are insane compared to the US and its way to much BS paperwork involved. I used to target shoot pellet guns competitively as a kid so thats how i got into guns.

I don't mind guns. Just never felt the need to own one. they're kind of fun to shoot, but I'm a huge scatterbrain and am pretty sure I would leave my handgun behind at Denny's If I owned one.

I hunt with them mainly. Hard to shoot birds out of the sky with a sling shot and pheasant are tough bastards with armor plating anyway. It's also a sport. I enjoy hitting moving targets, the unpredictability, the nature. I enjoy the food, animals how they are to supposed to live wild, happy and free not locked up and injected and fed garbage. I enjoy the comradery of my friends I go with.

Another thing I do is three gun and that's all about sport where you compete against others in a multigun competition for highest score. I like to compete. I had 4 brothers and that's all we did is compete so it just seems natural. I can't wrestle or play football anymore, too old, but too young for golf. (I'll prolly always be too young for golf or bowling tho:p)

I would rephrase to ask what is the attraction of hand guns. At least rifles and shotguns have practical uses.

In the spirit of maintaining a somewhat sane thread I am asking this genuinely wondering what your thought process is regarding this matter. Does a handgun kill you more dead than a rifle?

Hand guns are easy to carry and conceal. Honestly that you would even ask this question shows how completely out of touch with reality American gun nuts are.

Ask yourself why America has so much gun crime compared with countries like NZ. We have just as many guns per capita, but we don't allow hand guns or automatic guns. Just think about it for a while.
