In the house arrest program I'm in some staff had some issues with their computers and couldn't retrieve some documents and I told them they should have emailed the documents to themselves and they were DUMBFOUNDED and said they had no idea they could do that.

Fun fact: You can text to an email! No, really, put an email instead of a phone number and the text goes to the email. This is great if you need to send info to the whole department at work or something but you're not within any kind of wifi range. Techs at my work use this all the time to check in to sites. Easier to send a text than to VPN in (if there even is internet where they're at) The opposite is also true, but you need to know the carrier of the destination so it's a bit less intuitive, but it's usually [10 digit number]@txt.carrier.com and you can email and it will show up as a text.

Every once in awhile I see a post(s) on here that make me seriously question the "tech" designation of this forum....

As far as backup goes: What if you have a PoP server though? :confused_old: And it doesn't keep a copy.

You backup your Thunderbird (or other mail client) profile.

For me, the way I'm setup is I use pop, but I have a local email gateway that basically uses fetchmail to get mail from the internet pop server as well as do the spam filtering (local cpu cycles are way cheaper than online ones), then I use imap to access the email from my clients. The gateway server is then backed up regularly.

That's basically all I used my gmail address for at first, like 18 years ago or something.
