Okay, just jamming to some rap tunes in my car. Damn it sounds/feels good pumped thru my 1200watt class D amp and 2 12"'s.. :Q
but I got to thinking (I know, I know..)
I'm kinda lost on some of the lingo, so what better place than a forum of a bunch of hardware geeks to "learn up" on the latest back-alley ebonics.
First few, from "Big Tymers - Number 1 Stunna"
<< The Lexus - the new one, that came out 2001 with the frog-eyes - I got that bitch on dubs
The new Yukon - thats bubble-eyed - I got that bitch on dubs
That Mercedes wagon - with the kit.. thats kitted out.. look like its got frog-eyes - that bitch on dubs
...we all drive Bentleys on dubs >>
Okay. first off, what is "on dubs" mean? there are several more car references in the song, saying they are "on dubs". WTF? there is also references to "dubs" in another song of theirs, "Get your Roll On"
Now once I figure it has something to do with cars, Nelly throws it in like its something to do with marijuana sales?
Nelly - "Greet Hate Envy" (great song)
<< I opened up shop at 13... dimes, dubs, quarter sacks, and O-Z's >>
So what is this mystical "dub"? and what of "O-Z's"?
And whats with the references to frog eyes and bubble-eyes? I assume its something to do with the way the headlights appear on the car??
speaking of "get your roll on"
<< tv's - must. buttons - must. CMD - platinum.. plus.. >>
also, back from "#1 Stunna" we have
<< Ride Bentley's round my city on buttons ya bitch >>
So.. buttons? and what is CMD, and why must it be platinum plus? Last I checked "cmd" was the command line for Windows NT? :Q
back to the lyrics.
<< N****, what yo.. bank.. 'bout..
Dog I been.. lost.. count >>
wow. now even I'm smart enought to decrypt that one, he's asking him how much $$ he's got in the bank, and the other (manny fresh I think?) is replying that he's lost count. But that is the most creative use of pseudo-english I've yet to come across. I like it!
back to my new favorite album, Nelly's country grammar. Isn't that an ironic album title? :Q
#3 - Greed Hate Envy
<< I might ride tha range wit tha Roley on the rocks >>
- ??? I know "tha range" is a Range Rover, a personal favorite of Nelly, and the Roley I'm pretty sure is a Rolex watch, with the "rocks" being diamonds. Am I pretty close?
In the chorus, we have
<< Greed, Hate, Envy but cake will do >>
. What is this cake? And why will "it do" ?
on to #4 - Country Grammar
<< Daps and hugs, mean mugs and shoulder shrugs >>
- I won't even attempt this one.
<< Give me D's wit a rubber hammer
My grammar be's ebonics, gin tonic and chronic >>
D's? rubber hammer?
okay, I'm too tired to go on. but I could go on for pages. Just another couple random ones used over and over in this album, "tics" referring to females, thats an interesting one. and "Crissy" and many other forms, obviously some type of liquor, referenced in nearly every rap song, what exactly is the shelf name of this alcohol and why is it a favorite among millionaire rappers?
okay.. its a start. I'm trying to learn, someone help a poor beloved patriot out
