The 199/299 price is from an ATT subsidy. From everything I can tell they are requiring either:

1. you must be eligible for an upgrade or,
2. You must be a new customer or,
3. You must be a current iPhone owner

Check out the quote below

When the 3G device launches, all active postpaid customers in good standing with a 2G iPhone will be eligible to receive the qualified upgrade pricing for a 3G device regardless of service tenure. (Customers that would not otherwise be eligible due to tenure will be made eligible at launch).

So here's the rub- if you are an ATT customer not eligible for an upgrade (and you won't be before 7/11) and you just sold your iPhone........

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET IT FOR $199/$299???????

I sold mine for $375 the day before WWDC and just bought one back last night for $250.

All iPhone owners are eligible. It's just for people who bought a "subsidized" phone previously. So if I was in a 2 yr contract with a subsidized Blackberry, I would have to pay the termination fee in order to get a subsidized iPhone.

And why did you buy a 2G phone back?

If you owned an iPhone, you didn't knock out your eligibility for an upgrade, so even if you sold yours, you're fine.

Bought it back because-

a. I can make money on it at $250 and
b. i don't have an iPhone anymore after Thursday.

You can log into your AT&T account online and check your upgrade eligibility status, but even more than that, the only time that AT&T won't allow you to receive a subsidized price is when you've already taken advantage of a subsidized price in the last 22 months (on a 24 month contract).

If you bought the first gen iphone, you paid full price without subsidies, so you still remain eligible for a subsidized phone, whether it be an iPhone or any other phone that AT&T sells.

If you read what ATT has put out so far it says all iPhone owners. So an iPhone owner who is not eligible for an upgrade is still good for the subsidized price. I am one of the folks who isn't eligible as of right now for an upgrade, but has an iPhone.

Hmm.. see that's weird. I'm super annoyed at AT&T already, and I don't even have their service right now. Hah!

I think this is something that AT&T needs to release details about. Update the pricing schemes and let us know EXACTLY what we're going to get on July 11th. It's like they don't really know what they're going to offer, and they're just leading us along.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused with AT&T regarding the new iphone... I sold mine in anticipation for the new one as well.

Here's the deal:

1) You signed up for AT&T service with the initial iPhone launch. The iPhone 2G wasn't subsidized so even though you signed a contract, AT&T is not out money on the deal. You're eligible for the subsidized price of a new 3G iPhone on launch.

2) You're an existing AT&T customer that is 2-21 months inside their contract without an iPhone and you want to buy the new 3G iPhone. Since AT&T subsidized your original phone, you are not eligible for the subsidized price on the 3G iPhone. If you want one really, really, really badly you're going to have to pay an unsubsidized price, generally $150-200 over the subsidized price to replace your current phone. If you're 20 months in to your contract and don't mind signing a new one when you go to get the 3G iPhone, I'd recommend waiting a couple of months to let your upgrade eligibility kick in.

3) You are an existing AT&T customer 2-22 months within your contract. You bought/received a phone other than an iPhone and bought an iPhone sometime during your contract. You are not eligible for an upgrade because the subsidy on the phone you replaced with the iPhone is not repaid. Check with customer care. If AT&T is a little like Sprint in this regard, they will go by your last subsidized phone purchase, and not the date of your contract renewal. This will likely take some talking and for a service rep to be smart enough to realize what's going on. Your best bet on this will very likely be an AT&T corporate store, not a Apple store. Remember that you will have to be at least 22 months from the purchase of your original phone. Say, for instance, you signed up with AT&T in September and got a Blackjack II. Then, you got an iPhone from your SO or whatever for Christmas. You won't be eligible for the subsidy price on a new iPhone until July '09, 22 months from the purchase of your original, subsidized phone.

And pricing for the 3G iPhone looks to be exactly the same as every other data device AT&T offers.
Voice Plan + Data Plan + Features.
It should be noted that AT&T's current $30 data plan includes NO text messages. You're looking at a minimum of $70/mo. 39.99 for 450/5000 minutes, $30 for data service. 200 text messages for $5, 1500 for $15, unlimited for $20.

One thing that would be interesting is, if these are treated just like regular AT&T plans, if you can go in and change your data package to the $20 medianet package available on most phones which includes unlimited data and text, but is not meant for pda phones. Currently, you can do this online if you own a Windows Mobile device.

The text message issue is still up for debate, some have received confirmation from AT&T that the iPhone will still receive 200 text messages per month with the $30, but I don't think anyone knows for sure yet.

bearxor - thanks for the detailed information. Any idea if we'll be able to choose the $20/month edge connection plan?

I'll be using my iPhone about 90% of the time outside of the 3G coverage.
