why is it that achievements are so much cooler/better than trophies?

Is it the sound that comes up and points that it shows when you get the achievement?

is it because it's in the center of hte screen and easier to see?

is it because it's not in size 4 font?

Is it because there is an actual score associated it as oppose to total # of trophies?

is it because it's easier to view achievements than trophies (dont have to go 10 menus deep)?

is it because you can view them online and the psn trophy online thing is not updated instantly?

WTF is it? I can't pinpoint it, but it's a combination of the above for me.

I actually don't care about achievements or trophies, but it seems to me like Sony did the trophy thing as an after thought, where as MS had the achievement thingy from the start :)

edit:

Also you achievement notification during gameplay, as opposed to having to quit your game to see if you got a trophy.

you get trophy notifications as you win them. it is in the upper right hand corner of the screen and it makes a little 'ting' sound and is in like size 4 font.

Yeah it is now - it was not that way originally.

Because there's not enough variation in scale in the trophies. There's only 4 levels... bronze, silver, gold, platinum. With achievement points you get a number system which is a good gauge to let you know how hard the devs thought it would be to accomplish. Anywhere from 1 to 1000 gamerpoints for each achievement means a lot more room to assign varying degrees of awesome. I'll get a silver trophy 1 hour into a game and 8 hours into a game, and the both feel the same... but on the 360 I'd get 100 points and then like 250 points so it FEELS like it's worth more.

yeah...

Depends on the games. I mean, on one of the Madden games, you get an achievement for running the ball. Just doing a run play: Bam! Achievement. Doing the forced tutorial? Bam! Achievement. I mean seriously? That, and the fact that you can't add in new achievements except with paid DLC was stupid. If someone came up with an amazing idea after a game was released, why not make it an achievement?

I think that's actually fairly meaningless. It all goes into your Gamer Score pot and thus the value of a 250 achievement vs five 50 point achievements is lost. You would have to look at every game individually to see how someone actually got to their current score.

For this reason I actually think Trophies are better. Yes, they all go into raising your level, but they keep the easy to see breakdown of Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum trophies. And speaking of the Platinum, that allows for a quick way to see how many games a person has completed 100 percent. Plus, every trophy, including Platinums, add to your overall level. Getting 1000/1000 on the 360 is meaningless in this regard. There's no bonus for doing that. However, with trophies there's a sizable bonus for each Platinum.

To answer the OP, I think the main reason people may prefer Achievements is it was first. People started working on Achievements and building their Gamer Scores before the trophy system was implemented. They're more invested in it. I really think that's the main reason above all others.

I have both and don't care about either achievements or trophies, so neither seems cooler to me.

They're both a horribly stupid idea...yet I openly admit that for some strange reason unbeknownst to me I love getting achievements.

Heh... a lot of people are that way. Maybe not in thinking they're stupid ideas, but a lot of people will say they don't care about their GS, but admit to getting satisfaction from having the Achievement notification pop up even when they weren't expressly going for any Achievements.

I will admit, if you have a lower GS than me, you're a total noob; if your GS is higher than mine, you have no life.

That achievement noise is like crack for me, I can't get enough. Just the other day I finally unlocked the last achievement for Oblivion so I had a perfect 1250... I'm still in a good mood over it :D

I have both and much, much prefer trophies. I like the sound more (a LOT more), the icons, and I like ultimately getting a platinum at the end.

Wat? Hit the PS button, go to trophies, pick game.

They are, in essence, the exact same. Multiplatform games are completely identical.

How is the trophy system busted?

Seconded. Both systems have worked fine for me.

I think he's just referring to the fact that early PS3 games did not have to have trophies. It only became a requirement to include trophies in 2009 sometime.

Doesn't always sync unless you try to compare your trophies to a friend, and if you are in a hurry just hit circle and it stops the sync immediately, if it even tries to sync. Most of the time it doesn't.

i think its just the way it is incorporated into the dashboards.. i cant explain it. trophies just dont seem as important on the ps3. i think it comes down the the sync things. freakin annoying. so i cant be bothered everything i want to see trophies to wait for that to load. i want instant pop up like xbox.
