Thought this was interesting... (no I didn't pull it from a chain email). As a new parent, it's amazing what we do for our infants to keep them "safe" nowadays. But I turned out just fine myself... what do ya know?

To Those of Us Born Between 1930 and 1979

Nostalgia is the Freedom of 'Old America'

To all the kids who survived the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. ...

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. Why?

Because we were always outside, playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. We had friends and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers problem solvers and inventors problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If you are one of them: Congratulations!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?

Yea to bad many kids died due to many things he talks about. Heck SIDs has been reduced by more than half.
This sounds like the type of BS that faux keep saying. They just keep saying it enough that people dumb enough to watch faux believe it.

Oh and you have a link to this? Or was it really a BS e-mail?

Yep did a simple google search under "To Those of Us Born Between 1930 and 1979". Seems it is a BS chain e-mail that keeps getting passed around and posted at other idiot web-sites.

It was taken from another general forum. Obviously this is written by a person "venting" and not anything formal. I agree SIDs has been reduced greatly but the point of posting this was exactly what I wrote... I mean we had to spend another hundred bucks on BPA-free bottles a couple months ago because back in July of 08 they didn't care about that whole BPA thing as much and they were a very optional... option. Now it's a growing mandate.

However, it IS part of a chain mail...
I knew I should've taken out the 2nd-to-last line. Focus on the topic... we discuss topics here. We're so constrained by "safety" concerns and many laws are in place because of the sue-happy that we can't even enjoy things anymore. I still remember sitting in the front seat of my dad's Firebird. Remember stuff like that? Will your kids?

We do discuss topics here...and in spite of your denial, the topic is "People who believe chain emails." :D

Actually, my kids DO remember riding in the front seat...without seatbelts...but then again, they're "old." (my "baby" turns 30 next week) :D

While much of what that email sez IS true...and I agree that much of what they reference made those years "better," that doesn't make the many changes wrong. As a "civilized" nation, we try to protect our kids...and improve the quality of life for them.

Also, a lot of things have changed in the world to make it a less safe place for kids...HOWEVER, one thing your chain mail doesn't mention is the great Polio scare of the early part of last century...from experience, it lasted for decades. (do kids still have to get the multiple polio vaccines at school?

i agree for the most part. the reasons we have huge incidences of ahsma and allergies is because we are not exposed to "the bad stuff" like dirt, mud, worms, frogs, etc. as kids and do not build antibodies. i was only born in 86 but even when i was a kid i would be outside all the time, getting scraped up, falling off my bike, catching frogs. never had a video game in my life, we built carts to go down the hill (they had breaks though) tree forts and even had some lawn dart type things. I think a lot of parents are too protective of their kids.
my kids will have bikes, play in the mud, get hurt, play baseball and build tree forts, they will play on teams, and get cut if they are not good enough. they will be free to choose there own activities, to experience things on their own, to learn from them.

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. My mother smoked and I'm about certain she took aspirin.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints. This was the norm.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads. All true, but no cap for me. My parents sacrificed enough for the bicycle ... no money left for the cap.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Everyday

Riding in the back of a pick up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Drank it right from the faucet too.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. I remember doing this, although there may not have been four of us.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. Why? See below.

Because we were always outside, playing...that's why! Every moment possible.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K. This, except I usually came home for meals because I was hungry from all that playing.

All true.

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. No broken bones or teeth. No lawsuits either.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. All true. No close calls with eyeballs or anything else for that matter. I was taught to not even consider shooting at anyone.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Guilty of this.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Yup

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! Every time. And the neighbors kept an eye on us too. We knew we weren't getting away with any shit.

Why, thank you!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it? Sorry, no.

LOL
I was just talking to the wife about this the other day. I'd get up when the sun came up and eat breakfast. Then I'd be on my bike and gone all day. I can't remember ever eating lurch but I don't remember ever being hungry.
Back home around 5 for dinner and then back outside to play. We didn't have to come in when the street light came on, I had to be in at 10.

In high school, I had no curfew. I just had to tell them when I was getting home. But if I said 3:00 AM, I better not walk through the door at 3:01 AM or I'd get my ass handed to me.

Whats your issue with it? Are not most of those statements true in it. Do you have a problem with those statements. Are you the stupid ass kind of parent that is offended by it? I don't get your angle here.

That entire list can be summed up as: Kids should play outside more. That's all it really comes down to.

I was a child of the 70's, had an Atari 2600, etc, but played outside almost nonstop (atari was what I settled for when I couldnt play outside with friends). I have very bad allergies as an adult (shot treatments), so there goes that theory.

One thing in particular that I miss were those cheap plastic kiddie seats for the back of an adult bicycle. My parents used to ride all over the place with my sister and I on the back, and then later I'd be on my 12 ton huffy (thank god newer bikes are lighter) while my brother and sis rode with them. I loved that as a kid. I went looking for one of them innocently last year and the clerk at the bike store looked at me, horrified. Apparently those are a big no-no now. Damn.

I also rode with my dad on his Harley at age 7 but I burned my leg on the exhaust pipe and never rode it again.

Every other chain email spam post gets treated as a spam post. Might as well be offering up Ipods in it. Don't take it personally KK, he is calling it for what it is.
Off that BS list, we DID ride in the back of pickups until one of my brother's dear friends had a buddy fall out of the back of his truck and splatter his brains along the side of the road. That was a reality of those times too.

Yeah, and our distant ancestors survived a time before medical science, before synthetic materials, before electricity, before the wheel, before the use of fire, and so on.
Uh oh, looks like a storm is coming. We've angered the gods and must do something! Human sacrifice, anyone?

Oh wait, I just cut my hand on a sharp rock. Damn, I'll probably die of an infection. Ahhh, the good old days!
All this talk of extended lifespans and improved quality of life which have come about partially as a result of preventative safety measures built into everyday life, hah, it's all pure BS.

Only problem I have with the email is that it just makes a blanket statement that all of these things were your childhood by when you were born, when in fact, it is more like who your parents are. I was born in '82, grew up in the country and most of the list applies to me.

Marlin needs to leave the venom in the snake pit (P&N).
