To the Virtual Racers: do you use a racing wheel stand?

This technically belongs in either PC or Console gaming, but the issue is, it belongs in both. Rather get the attention of those here versus in only one of the other forums, and I know how much those mods dislike cross-posting! ():)

So... [:awe:] if you use a racing wheel stand (for reference, I have a Logitech G25), what do you use?
I play on both my PS3 and PC. Lately, it's basically just the PC, since my desk works decently to set up the wheel, but the way my living room is set up, not much to work with.

Having a single stand that I can hook up to my PC or PS3 with little fuss sounds like a great idea, but quite a few options and some look better than others.

edit:
forgot to add, if at all possible, one idea I'd really love would be having the clutch not immediately next to the wheel; I'd enjoy having it next to my leg, though it seems about the only way to really achieve that would be to have a racing seat or cockpit - not looking to spend that much money, and a permanent racing seat also takes up a fair bit of room.
Something that can fold up or stand against a wall and take up less space would be ideal, so obviously I am going to have to make compromises somewhere.

I was gonna build me an actual cockpit with a controller and car seat for my Forza2, but ended up scrapping the project because the steering wheel was shitty. The feel, the feedback, everything about it was crap, and this is the upgraded "pro" racing wheel that they have at BB.

Then I got into my car and went for a drive.

Yeah I saw the Fanatec one and it's been one of my preferred options at this point, but I seriously want to choke someone at their place of business, notably whoever decided to charge $60 for the G25 Clutch assembly adapter stand. Seriously, that's just wrong. Brings total cost after shipping definitely over $200!

A couple of very similar products are going for less, so not sure just yet.

Bleh, my rig would have been much cooler. It was planned to take the form of an F1 cockpit, complete with speakers, rumbles and Recaro seat. Maybe I'll start that shit again...

Indeed that would be awesome. One day, I may be able to afford to some kind of crazy dedicated system.

Something to use for both PC sims and GT5. Will also have to get the PSEye to track head movement to enable a simulated "turn head toward apex."

I don't use any stand, PC is the only thing I can use my wheel with, so I just attach it to my work desk. Not optimal, but good enough.

I'm not sure about the 'clutch' problem. Do you mean the clutch pedal? It's next to the brake pedal where one would expect it. If under clutch you mean the H-shifter, it's not fixed to the wheel, though I guess without a racing seat, it's hard to attach it below the steering wheel.

Yes, and exactly. That's what I'm basically expecting, just kind of hoping someone had an idea about that. Because yes, I'd like it to the right of my leg like it would be in a racing seat, but some of the stands like the Fanatec one at least bring the real low enough to the lap (if desired) that the H-shifter (no idea why I called it the clutch and not something related to 6-speed shifter or related).

bump

decision time draws near. I'm itching to start up a few sims and dammit I am telling myself to wait until I have a proper stand now that it is in my head.

Well I can speak from experience.

For a long time I ran with the XBOX wheel, playseat EVO, 42" LCD, surround set up etc.

I still have it but switched to the Fanatec wheel (ridiculously nice but ridiculously expensive also)

I built a stand for the LCD to sit on and built a raised platform for the playseat to sit on to raise it up off the floor.

It works very well and is fun to play. Sometimes I will move the playseat/platform into my family room and game in front of my front projection set up. This is way more fun but not ideal so I stick mainly with the dedicated set up in the game room.

The playseat EVO works well and can often be found on sale. Mine was under $200 (I think $100ish or so) when I got with free shipping from Amazon. I would have preferred some of the newer items out there that are full cockpits but 2+ years ago they weren't readily available for anywhere near a reasonable price. My only major gripe about the playseat is the bar in the middle between your legs. If I can come up with a way to get rid of that one day I will cause it sucks using the new clutch, brake, gas pedals I got from Fanatec.

My dad just got the Fanatec Wheel stand for X-Mas and it is really quite nice. He is a PC gamer so this was more ideal for him.

I'll see if I can find my info and pics on my setup, it's in the console section somewhere.

There are many, many people that have made their own from wood which is what I would suggest if you are handy at all.

The other thing to look at is possibly find an arcade op looking to ditch and old driving game cabinet & chair. This would be good too but would still require some handy work on your part.

i built a stand from 2x4's and MDF. it can be used separately, or with a car seat that it locks into. i have no pics, though.

My old thread

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=143431&highlight=playseat

I need to do some updated pics as I have fixed it up a little bit better but still have some additional work to do

How did you secure such a price?

If I can get that seat for $199 shipped, I'd be on it in a heartbeat.
Refuse to spend any more than that, at the moment at least. In the future once I wrap up school and move into my own apartment permanently, I might look into a new TV. My 32" 720p LCD might find its way into being a permanent racing display.

most pre-fab stands have a post in the middle that you have to straddle. it sucks.

it's also probably not very stable.

well a lot of the pre-fab stands have plenty of reviews that state they are indeed stable, and many say the center column never gets in the way.

But indeed I am looking for one that doesn't have a column right in the middle. There was one or two I saw that didn't have that, but I'd like to get a general opinion.

I'd set out on making my own but at the moment I'd really prefer something that can easily be folded and stored with a small footprint. And easily moved between living room and bedroom (as I'll use both my PC and PS3).

I'd get the one that has posts that sit on either side of your lap so that it gets close to your body, but the chair I use with my computer doesn't offer anything for those posts to rest against.
