I award you 1000 internets.

My basement flooded because all 8 inches of our snow melted in 2 days, plus a rainstorm. It was a finished basement, now it is basically gutted out. I'll be spending the next month (or more) redoing it with my dad. Several other people in my neighborhood had this happen also.

Good job sir.

Did you go swimming?

I think at the worst point, the water got almost 4 inches deep. So no, I did not go swimming.

I definitely had my water wings on though, just in case.

:frown:

as much as you can keep any window or porthole open down there with a fan as well.
Just try to keep that air moving to slow down the inevitable staleness

Wow that sucks... all that work gone. Guessing you have to redo all the walls too as it seeped up?

We had to knock out my closet, but other than that we got pretty lucky in terms of the walls. Of course we have to get new trim everywhere. The biggest project was tearing out my floor, my bedroom had a 2" raised floor, so we ripped all of that out today. Luckily the people we hired to suck out the water also ripped out all of the carpet, or else I'd be doing that for days.

I ran around quick enough before the water got to any of my PCs or my 360 lol

Did you find the crack and seal it?

There was no crack. Water was rushing in through the drain-offs so fast that even both sump-pumps couldn't keep up.

Ah that sucks. My parents bought a house and the basement flooded, they had a crack behind some of the drywall the previous owners never fixed.

The funniest part is that it didn't flood just once. It flooded 3 times in one day. The first (and worst) was at 6:30AM, second about 2PM. They then thought they had things under control. Around midnight it floods again, evidently somehow the main sump-pump quit working altogether between 2 and 12.

This is why I'm glad I don't have a basement. I don't envy you after dealing with my water heater flooding half my house 2 months ago. Good luck.

...not sure how this is a negative on basements altogether? If it wasn't finished it would still be useful storage space. And your water heater would have been in the basement where it likely wouldn't have done any real damage.

I love my basement, but it isn't prone to flooding either...I think that part kind of depends on the lay of the land around your house.

man that sucks,
Happened to me on 12/26, had just finished hanging drywall in early December, and over a foot of snow melts all at once during a thunderstorm .... Pretty much my whole basement had an inch or so of water ... It all came through a window well, faster than I could bail it out with a bucket ...

I haven't put new drywall/insulation along that wall yet ... but I have gutted most of it (water got behind all the insulation...)

I need to figure out a way to drain my damn window well, but the sump is all the way on the opposite side of the house, and to my knowledge, there is no drain or anything for it (I dug out all the gravel and through several inches of rock hard ice cold frozen dirt) ...

Anyhow ... good luck to you ...

Ouch. That sucks. Any sort of insurance coverage?

If you've already torn the damp stuff out you're doing pretty well. It's best to get that junk out as fast as possible to keep it from molding up your house.

My parents had that happen and their insurance covered all damage. My brother is a homebuilder so he had a crew there just hours after the flooding. They removed all the carpet, padding, and all ruined fixtures. They also removed all baseboards and drywall up to 4 feet. Then they ran industrial fans and de-humidifiers for a week or so to remove as much moisture as possible. My parents still haven't re-finished the basement because they never use it.

Just saying that a basement would be one more thorn in my side. When you own a house, things break....ALL THE TIME. I've learned this over the past couple of years. Hence, I'm glad I don't have a basement. 🙂 One less thing to worry about.
