To the IT guys out there, do you work from home?

Lately I've been working from home instead of driving into the office (my commute is a 5 hour trip these days). Technically I really should be in the office as my company does'nt sanction work-at-home jobs, but I think my boss kinda looks the other way in my case because of the hellish commute. Most of my job entails working with a couple of Unix boxes and maintaining jobs and scripts. It's interesting work, but I'm still a neophyte with Unix so I've got a lot to learn.

So does anyone else work from home?

What kind of work are you doing?

Do you have a server at home? (I'm looking for suggestions, I want to build a Linux box to practice on. In fact I'd like to build a massive storage server)

Yes, I do. I do web design at home, mostly. I can access any of the servers from home, but prefer to work on them on campus.

That'd be pretty sweet if I could do that and make a decent living, I just don't have those kinds of skills or contacts

you live close enough to walk to work

My commute is a 2-hour round trip. I started telecommuting this year. Our facilities are based throughout New England and our servers are in New York/New Jersey. I still go in a few times a month to do troubleshooting, but mainly I run the website and email system from home. It was somewhat difficult the first month because it's hard to stay disciplined at home, but if you make it your priority by doing it first thing in the morning, you'll have no problem staying on top of it. I get a relaxing environment, more control over my diet and exercise, and less stress and more time and saved gas money from avoiding the commute.

Wow, 5 hr commute is insane. As for me, no, i don't work at home. It may sound like a good idea, but i don't have the discipline to actually work unless i'm under pressure.

OP, why do you have a 5 hour commute? How far away from your office are you? 5 hours isn't a commute, it's a day trip!

When I did IT work for a living I did as much work from home as possible. Being at home I didn't have endless lines of morons coming up and asking for help while I was in the middle of something.

About 70% of the time I'm in the office. About 15% of the time I'm in client's offices. The last 15% is reserved for when I do development or web design at home.

I can techincally work from home (telnet, citrix, etc) but it's not something I can do a lot (I should be available in person at all times during normal business hours).

The bulk of that commute is traffic, initially it only took me 2 1/2 hours (which sucked as well) but with the road construction throughout Illinois my drive time kept getting longer and longer. I live roughly about 65 miles away from the office.

Heh I hope you aren't in the wheel group! I work from home when it's required (server goes down, or if I need to do some work on a box when no one is logged on.)

I'm from out of state, so when I spend enough time at a client location I find a place near the office so I can walk. Works out well.

I work from home maybe 1 day a month....wish it was more, but I'm taking classes 4 nights a week now, so I have to be here anyhow.

Damn, 65 miles, that's far. I'm surprised the company couldn't find a comperable employee closer to the office. You must be a handsome devil!

As you can probably tell from this thread finding quality people isn't easy. We have people flying in every week from California, New York, Chicago, and everywhere in between. In addition, several people have temporarily relocated. We have no less than 4 people that travel from neighboring states for the week and drive back.

It's getting tough to find qualified people.

Agreed.

there are only limited hours I can do it effectively because of my kids. I can do a lot of it. though.

2.5 hours to go 65 miles? You must live in the worst traffic part of Chicago ....

Takes 1.5 to go ~20 in many parts of Atlanta.
