To the import fanboys: what's to hate about the Corvette (and maybe the Doge Viper too)?

Just wondering.. I love the way that car looks.. even the new ones. It's the closest thing to a race car you can drive and not have to pay over $100,000 for...

BUT! It is an American car, so I guess that means it's crap.. right?

Viper is less than $100k and will smoke the vette!

I have only two things to crap on the Corvette about:

(1) It's rear-end is MASSIVE. TOO damn big.
(2) It's interior is too cheap and plasticy (think Rubbermaid) for a $50,000 car.

Other than that, I can't really fault the car...it's just awesome.

Don't know much about the Viper, but I don't think Vettes have the best reliability.

Reliability is usually the thing the import fanboys gripe about.

There are certainly reliable domestics though. Taxis and police cruisers, and similar are very reliable.

Both are different cars. The Euro cars generally offer more sophistication and comfort. A different feel. Of course that comes at a cost. Because a car is fast, does not mean it cannot have different characteristics.

Grab one and let me know what you think. I'm curious about how hard it is to get at parts under the hood. Seems reasonably priced. You could probably sell it for what you pay for it five years from now.

Actually, if I were in a situation to buy, say, a WRX, I would buy a several year old vette instead, and make some aftermarket mods. For what you would pay for a Sub, you could have a real nice real sports car.

I guess that depends on why you are getting the WRX. It is a car that can drive in almost any condition. Would you be driving your vette in a foot of snow?

:D

I would buy a WRX STi over a vette any day, given I had the cash.

Yep, it does depend on that. I see many people who consider a WRX a sports car, and that is why I referenced it. My tastes run more towards Audi for all wheel drive. I could have made the same claim using an A4 as an example. In this context, an A4 is not a sports car. Sporty? Yes, but to compete we would be talking an S4, and that is of course a Euro car anyway.

I wouldn't mine owning a new Z06; it's probably my favorite domestic (behind the Saleen S7).

But, I don't plan to spending new $50-$60k on a car anytime soon.. so I'm sticking to my import.

Its a matter of taste of course, but if we are talking results, the car I am thinking of would trounce the STi on any paved road in america. It simply cannot compete. Of course if you are more interested in show than go...

Looks like someone is suffering from Buyers remorse.

Gotta brag about the Vette and Viper cuz of your impala ?

Vette, Viper can use interior upgrade, higher quality interior material.
Then I wouldn't have any gripes about it.

I for one however like the vette, the viper however doesn't really float my boat.

You sure about that? Stock? 300HP and 300ftlbs is nothing to scoff at, by any means... Although, I suppose you're right.. a blown V8 would make more.. and with the difference in price between a vette and a WRX STi, i'm sure you could mod it quite a bit.

I don't know what the vette develops stock.. heh. What about handling? Doesen't the STi handle better than a vette?

I'd still take the STi.. as you said, it's a matter of taste. :)

weird, european cars used to be known for stiff suspensions, not comfort.

american cars used to favor comfort of handling.

The Vette is an awesome car...especially considering the price. My only gripe would be the "cheapish" interior.

Wrong, both the Corvette and the Viper are very serious sports cars. Maybe that
does not make me an import fanboy...

My friend owns a Maxima and would never buy a Corvette. He used to own one, a C4 I believe, and it was always in the shop. He got a Maxima and has no problems with at all which is the complete opposite of the Corvette he had. He couldn't even sell the Corvette because everytime he showed it, it would literally break down.

Dunno about the C5 Corvette. I'm sure it's better though.

I have been in an S4, and a 'vette. The Audi was definitely the more comfy car, and the extreme Mercs. would be even moreso. They do not offer a plush ride like a Fleetwood of course. When making comparisons, you have to stay within the context of the vehicles purpose. Now, as I said, this is a general rule. I would imagine an F40 would be kind of stiff. :D

sorry way different vehicle.
