To supercharge or not to supercharge? Tis my question.

Would it be worth it to supercharge my '99 Dogde Ram?
Its a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 QuadCab with the 5.9L V8.
It'll be $3600 for the supercharger plus a few hundered for the installation.
Right now its got 245hp @4300 rpm(I think). I'v never seen the Rpm nearly that high. Now the supercharger would kick in @ 2100-2200 rpm.
My mom's Yukon has 320hp. Now I just don't feel good having less Hp than my mom. Its just the way I am. Anyway what do you guys think?

Or I could upgrade the audio system, add a grillguard, a wintch, slightly bigger tires, new rims(I don't like th stock ones and i don't mean buy chrome ones), and maybe a bigger fuel tank. I already have the $650 Infinity system upgrade, chrome tube side steps, a bug shield, tow hitch, and a bed cap.

Ofcorse it'll take a while to get the money(6 months+).

That site doesn't even have dyno charts or tell you what sort of gain you get out of things does it?

Nope but I read somewhere(dunno where) that it adds around 115hp. Now i dunno how true this is but its all I have to go on.

Well, it seems like a standard centrifigual supercharger... you'll get more peak hp but it looks pretty small and might putt out quickly. I doubt you'll get to 320hp with a small centrifugal. Mebbe look into a roots type blower for a more linear power delivery... that's probably better for a truck anywho. No aftercooler also will hurt your power production as well.

You can supercharge with a better unit for that kind of money...

I have never run across ANY product that requires 4-6 hours to install, and is as easy and trouble-free to install as the manufacturer claims.

I have visions of a long sweaty weekend (standing on a bucket so you can reach the crap on high truck) lots of cuss-words, about 8 trips to the auto supply store to get those thing-a-ma-jigs that were suppposed to be in the kit. Of course a family emergency crops up and you have to get the truck running TODAY. You wife cusses you for not spending time with the family unit, moves in with her parents, and files for divorce from you pathetic ass. You wind up selling your now basket case truck in the local paper for 10 cents on the dollar to fund your divorce lawyer, and wind up living in a van down by the river.

So I probably wouldnt buy one after thinking about it some.

I'd say: don't bother supercharging it.

Why?

If it's never seen above 4300rpm, driving fast obviously isn't something you care about. An as such, there's no reason to spend $3600 to buy a supercharger that'll only get used to half it's potential.

If you are set on getting a centrifical blower, I would go with This one. It is a Paxton NOVI 2000. More info here Expect a final rating of 340 HP or so. ( 40% gain HP, 22% torque )

Paxton is very enerous in their ratings. Expect this to be the minimum you will make.

Now LAUST ( who is another forum bot :) ) has a roots type blower from whipple. These make more power per PSI as they do not heat the air charge as much. the problem is, Whipple does not make a bolt on kit for dodge vehicles yet. it would be a custom install, which would push the cost over your budget.

My advice: don't supercharge yet. ( don't shoot me! ) get used to the truck first. A supercharger is a big step in the performance direction. Hell, if you have never even pushed the engine to red line, what is the point? You will get slightly better MPG, but only barely.

Hat I would do with that $4k you are looking to spend:
Power upgrades: Aftermarket ECM. Aftermarket exaust. Hold off on any intake mods as a supercharger will make them null and void.

Other upgrades: I am assuming if you are buying a winch, you are actually going to go off roading? Then get these items:Tough country front end replacement. Picture. You can modify it for a winch in the future. For winches, I would go with a reciever mounted one so you can move it from front to rear, while being able to remove it so it does not get messed up when not 4 wheeling. I would go with a 9000lb winch minimum for your truck. If you decide to upgrade the rims, remember to go wider. the 6" stock ones you probably have are nothing for wide er tires. And for tires, I would go with Pro comps M/T tires for 4 wheeling and street balance. Don't go with the ones soon to be on my truck. they will likely be too loud for your tastes. I would deffinately go with a bigger tank. I have a 75 gallon one, and I still want it bigger.

If you really want a Supercharger, than I will be happy to give you more info on them, and help you make an informed decision.

Ok maybe the wintch was overkill, I don't think I'll off rod too much. As for MPG I currently get 11-12 on a goodday highway driving with 89 fuel. Btw- where did you ge your tank from?

Tank was custom welded to fill the entire drivers side 1/2 of the truck. It even has little baffles on the inside to keep sloshing fuel from making my truck move. Needed it because on a good day I get 5-6 mpg :D

7.5 jeebus...still man. Although I'd LOVE to have a 1/2 or 3/4 ton chevy or ford with a TD, I just find it impractical, fuel burn wise. Nice trucks though.
