To spend or not to spend, that is the question.

Here's the scoop. A client gave me a laptop with instructions to buy a new battery and new AC adapter (total $250), and reinstall the OS.

Turns out that the unit was failing and the battery was not the problem. A local repair shop (mom & pop style) couldn't touch it. Basically, when I got it and put in the new battery, it worked fine. I loaded Windows but then soon after, it started to BSOD. Then, it would turn on, but wouldn't POST or anything.

Sony wants either $479 or $779 for the repair, the latter being if the motherbaord needs replacement. The client said to junk it. I cannot return the battery nor the AC adapter, so I either bill the client (which is fair, but would be upsetting) or sell via eBay or similar.

Here's the thing. I love this laptop. It's the ultra-compact 10" screen model, loaded with everything. So for aroudn $1,000 out of pocket, I could own this thing outrright.

Is it worth it?

Or should I seek a cheaper repair facility (not Sony)? Or should I just try to sell the whole lot and be done with it? Do people buy defective laptops?

Desktop repair is old hat for me, but laptops I have always sent out. Could you recommend where to buy replacement motherbaords for Sony laptops?

I really have no idea, sorry. If anybody would know, it'd be here though. If you could buy the board and replace it yourself then it'd definitely be worth it.

Did you send it out to Sony? What makes you think it's the mobo? I'd test the HD and RAM first just to make sure.

The local repair shop did those basic tests. That's all I have to go on...
