i'm doing a clean win xp install, wondering if i should go ahead and install sp2 or wait a little longer. seems like some folks have been having problems but i'm wondering if installing sp2 on a clean win xp system, without a bunch of other apps already installed, would solve this. what do you guys think?

I have had no problems with the two SP1 -> SP2 upgrades I did. Many people who said they had upgrade troubles said they went away after doing a clean install. I would not hesitate to install fresh with SP2.

i would install it !!!

It will solve ALL issues you ever had. Your computer will be secure 'til at least 2010. You will NEVER ever need another patch from Microsoft. It will make everything faster, more stable and you will be safe.

No problems here. One was slipstreamed into a new install, the other was upgraded.

I installed it. No problems for me. And I like the pop up blocker that's built into internet explorer now.

Installed it on the lappy. Getting ready to install on the desktop.

I have had no problems with sp2 on the lappy. And I installed it the first day it was available too and no problems "yet".

Personally, I'm waiting a bit more until I know for sure there aren't any problems with it. As it is now, my computer is running pretty stable already. And I don't need IE's pop-up blocker since I don't use IE (Mozilla/FireFox is way better) unless I'm doing a Windows Update or somethiing.

SP2 is working fine in both of my computers,I`ve already made a XP+SP2 slipstream version for my next clean installation down the road, the main thing I did after installing SP2 was a defrag and registry cleanup.

My brother has installed SP2 on his PC with no problems,I would say SP2 stability /compatibility is very high for most users and so I would recommend installing it .

I followed the instruction on this Microsoft site under "To create an installation of Windows XP integrated with the service pack" to do the integration.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/spdeploy.mspx#XSLTsection126121120120

Then, I followed the instructions on this link to create a bootable CD since I do not have Nero or Roxio.
http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/#wxp

Please note that on the Microsoft site, they keep refering to the XPsp2.exe file. But, the SP2 file that you download has a different longer name. You can just rename that file to XPsp2.exe.

I installed it, and only had small fixable problems:

#1 ununstall any virtual cdrom programs you have
#2 reboot and install sp2 in safe mode.

my only problem is my status bar in windows explorer disappeared and needed a registry key to bring it back.

XPCreate is a much better slipstream program. It not only slipstreams service packs, but also hotfixes as well. To run it, you put in an XP cd (or virtually mount one), and let it run for a bit. Later, you have a nice new .iso to burn to CD. Works well.

i use virtualcd. since i'm installing sp2 first, will virtual cd work for me or will it be hosed?

also, wondering about the guy who said he had to clean up the registry. i used to use a reg cleaner but became suspicious of it when i saw how much junk it still left behind (references to old programs i had uninstalled, etc). how do you guys do this - manually, or is there actually a reg cleaner out there that is worth something?

I'd personally wait at least 2-3 more weeks before applying SP2. Main reason is so chipset/mobo vendors have time to release updated chipset/whatever drivers to work with my "bleeding-edge" hardware. ;P I mean, it's already been established that the NF3's hardware firewall needs a driver update to work properly with SP2. And I'd prefer to wait for an Azureus update so I don't have to use that hacked "tcpip.sys" floating around. Ditto for StyleXP...

I apologize for my ignorance, but this is all new to me. I own a copy of XP Pro...the one before SP1 came out. So if I were to slipstream SP2 with my original cd, will I still need to run SP1? Or does SP2 cover everything that SP1 had? Thanks.
