To reduce global warming...

An airconditioner is 30% efficient, if you were to power the airconditioner via fossil fuels you'd be generating more heat than you'd be cooling. But, if you were to use solar power instead, hypothetically speaking, if you were to have air conditioners powered via solar power, would you be able to 'cool down' the earth? Because the sun's rays already hit the earth every day, I'm just wondering if taking that energy to power an array of airconditioners would work or not. It's hypothetically speaking of course.

airconditioners merely "move" heat. in an enclosed system like the earth they just generate heat no matter what you do, unless you can pump heat out of the system (into space)

Air conditioners generate more heat than they remove from the air, I thought.

BS. just don't use AC.

conservation of energy

you can only move heat energy around, like from the inside of your car to the outside. you can't destroy it. A/C doesn't send heat into another dimension

Releases fine particulates into the air to simulate a large volcanic erruption. That will cool things down a bit.

Seriously though, such a plan would actually heat up the earth. While the airconditioners would do absolutely nothing toward cooling the earth, the solar cells (or so I'd think) would tend to absorb more of the sun's energy than the earth naturally does, reflecting less back to space.

running ac always generates heat (turns power into heat). it just puts it all outside and the cool air inside

Definitely not.

Efficiency isn't a very helpful term when talking about air conditioners. A more useful measure is EER (energy efficiency rating). Most domestic sized AC has an EER of about 3 (some small units may get 4.5, larger units may be as low as 2.8). Essentially, EER is the ratio between the cooling power and the power input. So an EER of 3 means that to provide 3 kW of cooling, it would consume 1 kW of electricity (and generate 1 kW of heat).

In fact, heat pumps (AC run in reverse) are one of the most efficient methods of heating. Powering a heat pump with coal fired electricity produces less CO2 emissions than heating your home with the coal directly (by the time the electricity reaches your home, it carries about 35% of the energy of the original coal) - and only a little more than if you heated your home with natural gas.

I've got a better idea...

If everyone wore reflector sunglasses and stared at the sun all day then the heat would be reflected back into space, thus reducing global warming.

You should've posted this in Highly Technical. You'd probably get more serious answers.

No, I read in the manual for my Hitachi that it does.

well global warming cooled by ac no as said already.
powering an ac would take a lot of panels, not sure how many, but probably enough to be really impractical. maybe someone here knows exactly how much
and well theres probably no way to have enough batteries to power it at night...
probably easier to dig a deep cave house and live there instead like mole people lol:)

The solar panels we use on out stations at work run through an inverter and produce about 9W. They are approximately 20inches by 12inches (very approximately!)

Just my input.

And no, AC won't solve global warming, but your childlike innocence is endearing lol :)
