To RAID or To Raptor

Hey all,

I currently have a single 300GB Maxline 3 and a Seagate 500gb 7200.9. I'm considering purchasing either a second Maxline or the Raptor 150 and was looking for some input. I'm looking for faster database write/access times (in postgresql) and faster game loading times, as well as a faster overall feel to the computer. I'm slightly concerned about data reliability.

Option 1: Buy 1 raptor 150 and have 500seagate for storage
Option 2: Buy another 300gb Maxline, put them in RAID0 and partition them 100gb(for windows, applications, databases), 500gb for expendable storage (in case a drive fails), and have a 500 seagate for storage

If I choose option 2, I would probably do a weekly backup of the 100gb partition onto my 500gb seagate. I'm not too concerned with the extra 500gb of storage on my RAID array in case one of the maxtors fails, although they have 5 year warrantees.

Finally, what backup programs would everyone recommend for option 2. Thanks for your input.

RAID 5 controllers cost a lot of money, and software RAID 5 sucks. Plus, he would have to buy another 2 Maxlines instead of just 1.

Raid that ******, I had a 2+ 0 array for over two years on two partitions without the slightest hint of problems. You have a warranty and backups so there's really nothing to worry about, plus 1.1TB of storage is real sexy.

600GB > 150GB

RAID is a waste if you're doing it for performance reasons. Where's that dead horse again......

Get a raptor 150, then use the 500gig for backup.

Its such a nice setup, just download everything to 500gig, back it up to dvd important stuff once a month or whatever.

Why is it a waste?

It doesn't help all that much.

Either way if your looking for speed go for the Raptor. They aren't alot faster but its still a noticable improvment.
