Did the airline industry drop the weight requirements for luggage from 70lbs to 50 lbs ?

Last time I traveled, back in May, it was still 70 lbs for transiting the US but not with every airline. Overseas, if traveling from country to country without going through the US, it's typically 20 kg (44lbs), but even though they say they weigh the carry-ons, I have yet to see that happen.

I went from France back to Japan with a 55 lb carry-on. I think I had 7 or 8 bottles of wine in there. :D

Bottomline: Check with the specific airline.

got back from vietnam last week. flew china airlines.
going there, one guy had a case that was 34 kg. the woman behind the desk said he was 2kg over the limit and would normally charge (insert amount here of some ridiculous cost/kg over limit that i can't remember) but would "let him slide" this time.
