To overclock or not to overclock..that is the question

Hey!

This will seem stupid to a lot of people, but since I am still somewhat a noob to overclocking i figure I can ask.

What is the true point in overclocking a system?

Is it.........

A. That even though the majority of the cpu's will clock higher, the manufacturers underrate their product so that the cpus that might have had a faulty production process, will still run at the lower speed, which causes them to lower the bar so all of the produced processors will pass?

B. That since it can be done, you might as well do it?

C. Something I am overlooking?

I mean if certain games cannot run on an OC'd system and you need to bring it back close to factory specs, then isn't that a pain in the ass for a constant gamer always goin into bios on every time?
Is it that its possible to have a system so stable that it can run everytihng?

The reason I ask this is that I had an Asus A7v8X with an XP2800 that was 13X multi with a FSB of 172 and the motherboard finally tweaked and I have a sneaking suspicion that is was due to the OC'n.
Since my budget is somewhat tight with a new baby and alll, I am reluctant to OC again......
Any suggestions from any long time O'clockers?

get better price/performance ratio from ur chip, amusing little personal challenge, get bragging rights (perhaps... 😛), run stuff faster/smoother if done right...what have i missed?
 
Ask the same question to a "Car Tunning enthusiast" and he will give you the same answer, difference is that overclocking is free¡¡¡.
 
Not to hijack the thread, but say if I got a AXPM 2500+ and ran it @ 2.4 Ghz, how long would it last me ? doesnt it shorten the lofe of a CPU to overclock it ?
 
well my 2000+ has been running @2600+ for the last yr, stock cooling and voltage @ 1.675 (i think...), and it's still ticking over 4 me

(though i have had some funny prime95 problems- have 2 keep increasing the voltage 2 keep it stable- mebbe thats a sign of it screwing up- though my PSU is rooted and i have added a lot of components over the time- so that could also be a factor... 😱

consider the fact that you probably need to chip in more for quality RAM and heatsink

its cheaper then buyin the actual CPU rated at that particular speed, but its not completely free

I believe you are talking about medium-hard overclocks.
These days, almost ALL cpu's give a free 10-15% increase in speed with the same memory and stock cooler. Heck, some even do 20-25% FREE...

You just need to be smart when buying stuff, as many people are discovering it after 😉

The question is SPEED, SPEED, SPEED... That's it.

When we talk about OC, you have to understand that it's not a science nor a sure thing.
That's why some don't OC, some OC to 1%, other 5%, others 10%, 15%, 20%, 50% 75%,100%....

It's all about beeing smart in buying the "right stuff" and not taking unnecessary risks.

I've been overclocking since the days of 8088 and so far i've benn lucky ( ? ) and only messed up some disks when setting the pci bus to frequencies that the disk didn't like 😀

With experience and some wisdom, we learn how far we want to/can go.
There aren't two exact situation when overclocking. It's a game.

I only recomend OC to people that have some understanding of how the PC works, because everybody can go to the BIOS and change on thing in it from 0 to 10% and WOW... it's faster... But when the sh*** hit the fan, doesn't work or doesn't do anything, that's when the knowledge and experience come in hand.

it's called a 'stock' system... buy the parts, set them to defaults, go wild...

overclocking is a game... folks like zebo are pointing out that most of the stuff is high pain/low gain... buy low price ram, low price mobo, best bang for buck stock cpu, mid priced vid card, play games, buy girlfriend flowers with xtra bux... you'll be a couple frames per second behind the raging psychos, but you'll have a dependable, quiet system... and be philosophical about it - u were never going to have the fastest rig anyways...
