To other Comcast customers

Sometimes it seems as if when I am torrenting away on my laptop that the internet will just shut-off. Everything goes blank and doesn't respond.(Google, Yahoo, everything.. "Timed out". I can't do anything with the internet for anywhere from 10s to a minute, sometimes longer, but I never go downstairs and check if this is the case on the downstairs computer because it usually fixes itself by the time I get down there!) I force encryption on utorrent but allow incoming legacy connections(bad?) and I think I do all the right things but... I swear, if I am just going at it for a while, the internet just shuts off. Is it my wireless or does this happen to OTHER comcast users? I just recently moved and this never happened on my desktop at my old home with Charter. (And I'd fucking download for weeks on end, full throttle!)

I would say turn down the number of connections per torrent and\or limit the number of torrents you download at the same time. Some routers (especially the cheap ones from the ISP) can't handle the hundreds of connections that torrenting can make. They will puke\freeze\restart and internet will be disrupted for a limited time.

Well you should check your modem logs to see if any problems are being shown and look at your router logs to see if a problem exists with it as well.

Of course Comcast, in the past, has been known for throttling BitTorrent traffic, even if it's encrypted. I thought they'd gotten in trouble with with the FCC for this, but I really don't follow this stuff closely.

Well, I have a trendnet 802.11n router.. 633 or something. It works just fine at my old home(where I had charter) but here, it goes quackers. 🙁 So... I assume it's comcast. 🙁

We are talking about less than a day difference(I used the same router on two different connections in one day) and I have used DIFFERENT hardware before. Previously a netgear router was there and it did the exact same thing. The only thing at fault could be the modem and that isn't replaceable by me because it also has VOIP built into it. >_> So I think it is comcast throttling me. My assumptions are quite good I believe.

My download speeds on bittorrent never go over 500kbps. So... I don't see the relevance. It happens when I am going at 100 and when I go at 300, it just happens all the time.

From what it sounds like, you're hitting the half-open TCP connections limit in Windows or your flooding your router's connections table when you are using torrents.

Well I'm on comcast and they do have issues where I live so I check my hardware logs to see what is going on daily especially when issues are present. Exactly how did you set up your router for comcast? Is the router using the most current firmware? What does your comcast connection status look like? Give us facts please. This is what my comcast connection looks like.

I set it up like how a cable modem should be setup... All auto or DHCP. It doesn't really need anything else..

Latest firmware... blah-blah..
I have no clue as to how to check that... My router doesn't give detailed specifics(nor does any I own, and I have three) about my cable modems status.

EDIT: Trendnet TEW-633GR router is what I have.

EDIT: Anandtech loves it. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3136&p=7

Well according to http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30308/96/ there's a lot of throughput variation with that unit on the wireless side. No router gives you cable connection information, that is obtained directly from the cable modem itself. Until you are willing to check on your own equipment nobody will truly be able to help you.

I've tried it with different routers though... that's what you keep overlooking. Both routers are not broken... (Nor is one) Idk how to get the cable modems information even when connected. :-/

If you know the IP of your modem you can connect that way. If you don't, you can connect directly to the modem (router out of the mix) and do an ipconfig /all. Your Gateway IP adress will be the modem.

That is exactly why I asked for the operational status of your modem so click here to access it. This will help tell us if the problem is on your end or if it's with comcast. The modem status info tells us important information about your connection that will be useful to you if a call must be placed to comcast. From my own experience if they know that you know what is going on with your own connection they tend to be more helpful. I have notified them several times of outages in my area that didn't show up in their system until they began an inquiry.

I would try a hard reset of the modem and then see what happens. If you still see those errors in your modem logs then I'd call comcast and ask them about your connection. Usually if a customer calls with a problem they'll start checking other modems in the same service area. This often uncovers problems that went unnoticed. Check back in with us and let us know about your status.

bump

Anyone know some keywords to get to top tier support? I don't want to fiddle around. This guy made me reset the modem even though I told him the phone would drop off because we have digital voice... of course it dropped off.. I don't want to deal with noobs.
