Depends on the price for me; if I can get a 5950 for $250, I'm going to take the slightly lower performance for a significant price slash compared to the 9800XT. In either case, $500 for a video card is ridiculous, I'll just buy a 5900 non-ultra and clock it.

Dammit I clicked the wrong one.. Just take one away from the 9800XT and add it to the 5950.

your 2 choices should be as follows

a 9800 pro for about 280ish that can be o/c to XT levels

a 5900 non ultra with 2.2ns ram that can be o/c to 5950 levels for about 230ish

anything above these 2 cards is a waste of money, as the 256mb of ram is not necessary unless you play at 1600X1200 with everything maxed out in doom3 or something

Great info Schadenfroh! This will help in my decision of being undecided of my undecision.
