to nVidia fanboys: keep GTX260 for 2560x1600 gaming or what?

Just upgraded my monitor from a TN 1920x1080 to a Dell 3007WFP-HC, is there a reasonable nVidia upgrade to my GTX260 or should I wait for Fermi?

specs:
Gigabyte P55M-UD2 (so no SLI)
i5 750 (stock until TRUE LGA1156 adapter comes)
4GB Corsair 1600
500GB 7200.12 system drive
2x320GB F1 (RAID 0) for games and movies
Antec P182
Corsair TX650
Logitech G5 (wanna get a G500)
Logitech X-540 5.1

Thanks in advance.

Thats about it; sell the 260 and get a 295. The 280/285 are great, but I couldn't recommend that as an significant upgrade over a 260. If you have the cash for the 30" LCD, spend a couple hundred to get a good GPU to feed it (unless you just play WoW or something and the 260 will 'cut it' for a while).

Mostly UnrealEngine kind of games, not big specs needed. Getting the 30" took a great effort so not much money left.

I think I'll wait for nVidia news then.

Thanks for the comments!

just curious - is that tn 1920x1080 a 24" monitor? I've been considering going from 24 to 30. or possibly 27. wondering how the upgrade is for you?

Washoe:

yeah, had an LG W2353 23" 1920x1080 TN panel.
the main improvement apart from the large desktop real estate is S-IPS panel. This particular model has 92% gamut which means higher colour range. Viewing angles are way better too. TN won't give you either.

What the 3007SPF-HC WON'T give you: HDMI/D-Sub, OSD controls. The display won't scale images, that would be done by your display card.

an IPS or PVA 27" should give you the same advantages for less money in 1920x1080 AND most probably better connectivity and OSD. Check specs before you buy, there are TN 27" models too...

hope this helps.

How about a factory overclocked Gigabyte gtx275 with 1792mb of memory thats 3% faster then a gtx 285 from the factory for 319$ shipped?

Should handle that 30 inch monitor just fine with all that memory, plus gtx 285 speeds.
I'm sure you can overclock it a little more.

Sell the gtx 260 and upgrade.

Hey happy medium, that's an interesting idea! Thou I've had 2 bad experiences with Gigabyte vidcards both were using zalman coolers, I guess reference nVidia cooler shouldn't have trouble.

I gotta get rid of this GTX260 then

GTX275 will struggle with some of the more demanding games at 2560x1600. So will a GTX295. I'd wait for Fermi.

HD5970 is the only card that properly drive a 30" in all games. Crysis is finally fully playable at that res... 40 FPS average.

I guess you could SLi 3 GTX285 to get the same performance, but that's a utter waste of money imo.

Thou OC'd GTX275 sounds reasonable there aren't as many choices in my country. I think I'll wait for Fermi (here that means 2 months after Fermi) and see what to do.

Thanks all for the info!

Are you using one? I think crysis is the only game a 295 couldn't handle...although I don't play too many demanding games. But COD WaW and COD4 are aobut 80FPS at everything maxed.

Well I had 2 GTX275 before which is slightly better than a stock 295 and they ran everything else fine but Crysis and STALKER: Clear Sky. Since moving to the 5970 these games run very smooth maxed out, especially with STALKER, the difference is like night and day. I can now up the IQ in a lot of games as well.. all Source engine games run great even with 4xSSAA at 2560x1600.

I don't regret moving over at all.. might come back to Nvidia depending on how good Fermi is though.
