As many of you know I am a so called 'bloody foreigner', ie I'm here on Visa and originally from Europe.
What really strikes me is how sweet desserts are here in comparison. I like sweets just as much as anyone else but sometimes cakes are just too sweet, it almost hurts.

So what's up with that? Many times it would taste much better by just cutting out 50% of the sugar. I've tried it and it works great.

It's absolutely true, and I too can't stand it. I'm not from Europe, but I've spent a good amount of time there over the years, and I much prefer how they prepare foods.

[edit]Not to mention how many of our restaurants seriously overseason their foods. Many of the "sauces" tastes like a damn stick of butter. It's horrible.[/edit]

Yeah I know, it's a really controversial thing to say.

I'm biased. I really like sugar (as long as it's pure cane sugar). I have been cutting back myself, though... black coffee now, only water at fast food joints and restaurants, and, well, that's about it. Quite a cut-back when I usually used four to six sugars for each coffee.

Try going to a mexican grocery store and buy Coke imported from Mexico. It costs more than our Coke because it is imported, but it is different from Coke bottled in America because it uses real sugar.

Yep I've always thought the same... desserts are so disgustingly sweet!! I can't finish half a candy bar without a glass of water. (well i CAN, but it's damn unpleasant)

I think north americans are totally addicted to sugar.

exactly....except 4 sugars instead of 6.

Also...why is the sugar that we got for coffee and such so crappy in this country....except for the raw sugar stuff...thats decent.

baklava is grecian i think it has a good amount of sweetness to sugar ratio. I agree that US pastries/cakes are for the most part overloaded with sugar and require a glass of milk/water for desweetening, we're all gonna get diabetes, the pharmaceutical companies are gonna love it. they'll probably team up with the sugar lobbyists. :cookie: :(
