Is it possible to remove the expansion slots from the motherboard and have them on a separate board connected via a cable? I'm not talking about doing this to a existing board but to have one designed this way. Is it just cost prohibitive or is it due to some property of the way pci and agp work that keeps this from happening?
Another possible reduction could come from killing off the backplane. Since they already support the additional non-standard atx connectors with just headers on the board why doesn't a manufacture do this with all the external connectors so that a builder could use just what they wanted and place them where they'd like.
