mandrake is best. but keep windows on the system to dual boot for a while if it's your main system and/or you don't know enough about linux to do anything with it, but yes, it does need to be in a separate partition. don't feel bad if you don't know anything about linux, there aren't very many people who have reached a level of knowledge that's high enough to do a whole lot with linux, though, so you should either buy a book or find a guru(or group thereof, kinda like this) whose brain you can pick. i did both and i still don't know much, but then, i'm dumb, so you might have better results. good luck
