This is one of my favorite books, but mostly because it is a time capsule of a lost era.

I don't know how a sequel can be made that connects with contemporary issues.

Edit: So it was written in the 50's. Another time capsule, and maybe late life fame/cash grab.

It's not really a sequel. It was written prior to Mockinbird, essentially the original book she wrote, before the publisher asked her to rewrite the story from the perspective of the younger Scout. Apparently someone just found the manuscript.

None of the stories on this I've read said it was a rewrite, just that it was completed before mockingbird.

edit:
according to this write-up, mockingbird was more of a prequel than a rewrite.

I discussed this with an English professor and English teacher - it's suggested that perhaps after To Kill a Mockingbird, she didn't feel that her sequel was quite good enough, and had chosen not to publish it for that reason. However, as she's pretty old, she wants to see it published before the end of her life. E.g., The Matrix 2 and 3 weren't anywhere near as good as the first one. Unlike the Wachowski brothers, she didn't want the sequel to tarnish the image she created from the original.

She had worked on other novels since To Kill, but didn't finish them as she was dissatisfied with them.

if it's what i think it is going to be, boo radley is going to go on a mass killing spree of all the men who had tried to incarcerate him.

blood bath ensues and he is shot by the dad atticus.

and at the end

If this book is even half way decent it is going to sell millions and millions and millions. Here's hoping it's good...

the new book is about the character known as Scout as an adult woman.

'kill mockingbird' was written afterwards and is about Scout as a child.
so yes, the new book is the sequel to mockingbird even tho it was written first.

I'm looking at it from the view as to which was written first, not which was released first. Since watchman was written first and mockingbird was written second from the writers point of view it's a prequel even though they were released in chronological order.

A fine book, but a book that was fine standing on its own. It does not need a sequel. I liked Hamlet, but I'm not interested in Hamlet 2: The Adventures of Fortinbras

I read the story in the NY Times Latest News. It seems that there's some uncertainty about the legitimacy of this, the exact history of it. It was written before TKAM. They say it will be absolutely unchanged, I wonder. TKAM is said to be tempered by criticisms, suggestions/imperatives by the editor(s). This is her amateur piece. It might be quite good, maybe great, maybe destined to be another revered classic. Won't know until it goes public... in July? Why so long?

It isn't exactly a sequel. Well, it is but it was written before TKAM, so call it what you want.
