"......to infinity, and BEYOND?" quote: Buzz Lightyear

here's some more questions my 10 year old asked me after visiting our local planetarium. to the distinguished anand board members, i ask for your help, as i want to give her honest, accurate answers:

1. "i get the idea that our universe is expanding (or even contracting), yet i also heard that space is infinite. so do these two ideas contradict each other or can they be both right? if space is expanding then it's finite, isn't it? yet, if space is infinite, then it can't possibly expand beyond itself, right, dad?"
2. "if space is expanding, what is it replacing, and, is what space replacing infinite or does it also have a limit?"
3. "if you had an outside-looking-in view of the expanding universe, what shape would it be?"

*sigh* who said being a parent was easy? 😛

The universe is expanding inside of space which is infinite.

Space is not expanding,as it is infinite.

The universe would look like a frisbee, with more matter in the middle, than at the edges.
