To gun owners

Finally picked up my XD-40 last night. My main use for the gun is for home defense. I have heard conflicting things about keeping the clips loaded at all times. I heard that if you keep them loaded for too long that the springs will wear out and the gun may malfunction. What does ATOT do? Should I keep a clip with only 5/6 rounds in it so as to not wear out the springs? I thought of that, but it kind of defeats the purpose of a 12 round clip...

I dont know the answer as to the spring wearing out, but if you need more than 5/6 rounds to hit someone, you're doing it wrong

I don't think I would ever keep it loaded, but I do not own a gun. How long does it take to throw a clip in a gun? If you don't have time for that you're probably fucked anyway.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. I would just like to maximize my firearm's potential in a home defense situation. Yes, 5/6 rounds SHOULD do it, I just dont want to be caught in a situation where I need the extra 6 rounds and not have them. That would be quite unfortunate

Great gun.

I rotate my clips, keep one fully loaded and then rotate the bullets to another clip routinely.

I have the exact same gun which i do keep loaded with the magazine in the gun at all times, what's the point otherwise? 12 rounds in the factory mag using Federal Hydrashock ammo, nothing better.

That's why you go to the range once a month, or every two months and use those mags, make sure they still function 100%.

As an FYI, I'd have my XD40 for 2 years, not a single malfunction, EVER.

Mind if I ask how often you do this?

Keep them fully loaded, they are designed that way.

They've pulled loaded magazines from WWII and fired them with no problems, been sitting 50 years.

Constant compression doesn't wear out springs, the compression/decompression does.

And if you can afford the amount of ammo it would take to wear out a mag, you can afford a new one :)

This is the same thing I keep hearing. I keep every magazine I have for every gun fully loaded. What?s the point of having several magazines if you don?t keep them loaded for when they may be needed?

As long as you don?t have some cheaply made spring/mag, you will likely never have a problem unless you managed to really damage the magazine by other means.

I keep my carry loaded 24/7. I have 3 magazines for it and I rotate them every range visit. I typically visit the range weekly. At home I keep a revolver loaded constantly.

Just buy some extra mags, make sure you go to the range now and then and keep rotating them. You will be fine.

everybody says this but when you're scared shitless and trying to shoot someone, it's not like a relaxing day at the range.

you should be fine with keeping the mag fully loaded. I've heard that removing and reinserting rounds frequently is what really wears down the spring. I keep all of my mags fully loaded and I have yet to experience any problems.

I also always keep a mag in the gun as well, so all I have to do is rack the slide to chamber a round.

Those springs are so strong that it will take a very long time before they weaken. After two years the springs in my Springfield XD 9MM magazines are still so strong that I still can't put 16 rounds in the magazine by hand. By the time the springs do wear out, if ever, I will have purchased a new gun.

With my ever-vigilant Bacon around, I would have sufficient time not only to load my gun but also enough to make any prospective intruder a cup of fucking coffee.

Every time you call a magazine a clip you kill a kitten. Save the kittens.

TN law states that I am allowed to shoot until I feel the threat is neutralized. It just so happens I feel the threat is neutralized @ the same time I run out of ammo.

As everybody said, the magazines will be fine. I keep about 4 magazines loaded with self defense ammo. One of them is in the gun and the gun is ready to fire with a pull of the trigger.

Plenty of people actually store their ammunition that way, already fully loaded magazines. That's why it's nice to have plenty of them.

I've had my XD-9 Hi-Caps and Standard magazines full going on 4 years now and the springs in all of them are still tight. They're all factory magazines. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Oh, and congrats on getting an XD. They're solid guns.

Edit- Saved a kitten.

Depends on the clip. I have some Wilson mags for my Colt/Colt clones that I've kept loaded for more than a decade and they still work fine. I have Glock clips that I've left fully loaded for long periods of time also with no problems.

I've bought cheap mags that caused jams when brand new...you get what you pay for IMO.

Keep them fully loaded and go to the range and unload them the fun way at least once a month.

Factory magazines, never had a problem with them keeping them fully loaded. I had the worst luck with ProMag brand magazines.
