To go 2.1 or 5.1?

An oppurtunity has just come up for me to burn through my second set of speakers in 6 months, and I feel like getting new ones (family member wants to upgrade $20 speakers to go with new X-fi, I have Logitech Z-2300s that I can 'pawn' off). Here is my dilemma: my budget is a maximum of $300 CDN which leaves me the following options:

Logitech Z-5500 5.1 for about $280

Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for about $219

Im currently 50% Music/ 45% Games/ %5 Movies. I've used 2.1s for my whole life and would like to check out the rear channel experience. However, if my current Z-2300s are an indication of the quality of Z-5500s, I know that the bass is boomy and midrange is lacking (X-fi currently compensating for that <love you CMSS3D>). Nevertheless, they sound pretty good now. I'm not an audiophile, but seriously do appreciate good quality sound. At the same time, I have heard nothing but praise for the frequency response of the Promedia 2.1s. What bothers me is that I can get 3 more speakers for around the same price.

My other concern is space: I can probably find a way to fit the rear channels somewhere after stringing the wires under my carpet, but the center channel can never be centered since my LCD has no neight adjustment; it can go to the right or left or behind. Also, please don't tell me to go for the Promedia Ultra 5.1s, I'd love to, but can't justify $500 on speakers. So does anyone have any recommendations on which path to go?

Klipsch will sound better for music, but your games and movies will REALLY benefit from 5.1

I'd say get the 5.1 set and deal with the more boomy and un-natural sound in music.

I've seen the Klipsch GMX 5.1s for around $350 here, but are they any good in comparison to the Promedias? Also, I should add that I occasionally just turn the sound pretty low in games which seems like I appreciate musical acccurracy that games. On the other hand, maybe the awesomeness will make me jack it up. Anyways, thanks for the input so far.

If you already spent the money on X-Fi, you should get the promedia ultras instead of the GMX-D if you go Klipsch.

The GMX-D cannot take the X-Fi's 5.1 analog output. You can only get 5.1 through a digital connection on something that is already encoded in DD (movies and such).

unless your properly going to setup the 5.1 setup I highly suggest the 2.1 setup most stuff is played in two channels anyways :)

Games and movies are played in stereo format?
