To GFD or not to GFD...

I'm kinda new to overclocking Athlon processors since all my experience has been playing with FSB/Voltages on Celerons and Pentium IIIs.

From what I seem to collect, overclocking through the FSB on a Microstar K7 Pro board with a AMD 750 Tbird (950 MHz core) gets you no where, since it craps out around 107 MHz, true? So in order to get a 750 to 950 you have to use a GFD which lets you play with the voltages and multipliers, right?

Is what I say true? If it is, what GFD should I get? The Leufkins looks good for the price but there is a lot of talk about the Maximizer ones.

You won't be able to go over 110 FSB if you reach that. Your only bet is to get a GFD if you have a T-Bird 750 with 950 core.(NICE!) That's the only way to get it to run at 950 but you will be able to go above 1G. As far which one. They all do the same thing. Tom Leufkins makes good products so you won't be disappointed. Easiest to use would have to be the Afterburner. Anyway make sure you got a good heatsink and fans to keep T-bird cool

I am big advocate of the GFD.

I purchased the Leufken GFD and it works great. I have my 850 Classic (850 core) at 1000 (10x100). Whichever GFD a person has is generally their favorite, but they all do the same thing. As long as it works, get the least expensive one.. which I believe is still the Leufken GFD.

They are not all the same. The Maximizer has a built in voltage regulator and power filter, which feeds consistant voltage. It is also a well built unit. The others get the job done, but the Maximizer has those important features that others lack. A good link with reviews to many GFDs is here:

To me they all do the same thing. I have a Afterburner and it works great. I'm sure the Maximizer has its +/- but you can get a Maximizer for $25.00 which is a good deal.

Have you tried upping the FSB? I am not sure how sensitive the T-Birds are, but I am running rock solid at 120FSB on my "classic" FSB without a GFD. I know this is not the result everyone gets, but you should probably give it a try, you might get lucky like me....If not I would surely get a GFD and go nuts!!
