500 bucks is very cheap for a quality vacuum cleaner.

The dyson still runs circles around my 2000 dollar cannister vac. There is no comparison. The dyson really is that good and at 500 bucks it is a bargain.

Not if you can get a vacuum that is just as good for $200... all that proves is that you're a sucker for buying a $2000 vacuum.

I've been very impressed with Dysons.

My mum has a DC01 - now about 10 years old, and it's fine. OK, the plastic wand cracked because it got dropped down the stairs, but the a bit of duct tape sorted that out. The suction on that is pretty decent, and it's great for animal hair.

For example - she had some commercial cleaners come on Friday while out at work, and they did the hoovering with their 'industrial' cleaner - but I popped round on Friday evening, and gave the living room a quick going over with the dyson. I had to stop after doing half the living room to empty it, because it was full with dust and car hair.

I have a DC11 - this is one of those cannister type ones - but it's got massive suction and a rotating carpet brush. It's really very impressive. It's also got a HEPA filter for allergen reduction. It's absolutely brilliant for carpet and hard floors. The only problem is that if you've got a vinyl floor covering which isn't stuck down properly, it'll simply pull the floor up.

Well, we ended up with the DC07 for $300 with a 5 year warranty. So far I've vacuumed about 800 square feet and it's pulled up 8" worht of crap. For $500 I would have said no, but $300 isn't bad, I would have preferred $200, though. :p

And I did not have a good enough justification to argue his points, so I did not get one. :(

But I still want one.

Who's doing the vacuum? If you're doing the vacuum, tell him to shove it and get the Dyson.

But, it is his money.
Let's put it this way... I am in charge of all the money. He has no idea how much we have or what I spend on whatever. That is a trust issue and I would never take advantage. However.... if I were to go out and spend $500 on a vacuum and he came home and it was just here... he would never ask how much I paid for it or why I bought it if I already have two. He just happened to be standing there, in the store, and saw the price tag and was like "WTF did you bump your head?"

Also, whatever I tell him I want... he might flip at the exact moment, but normally comes back an hour later or so and tells me to get whatever I want. He knows I am very careful with the money, whether from his paycheck or mine. BUT... on this occasion... I really could not justify it ... spending $500 on a vacuum when I have two working ones. If one of them puked out and needed replacing, then perhaps I could, but just wanting it...dunno.

If there was anyway that I could get one here on a trial basis... even if just for a few days... to make sure it was worth the outlay, I probably would not have a problem. But I do kinda fear that I would shell out and not notice enough of a difference to justify it.

And if I am gonna get a Dyson, I am gonna get the best one. Just a fault of mine. If I am gonna shell out for something, I am gonna get the top one and have it last for years.

My Dirt Devils are both 7+ years old. I kind wish one of them would puke out ;)

The best way is to find someone who owns one, and talk them into bringing theirs over to try. You'll be amazed at what it will bring out of your carpets.
We had a high-dollar Electrolux canister with their beater-bar vacuum head. We THOUGHT it did a good job on the carpets, till our daughter brought her Dyson 14 animal over. I laughed at her for buying some stupid pretty POS vacuum and for buying into the hype...
Wow...she shut my mouth for me quickly...We vacuumed each room, and she vacuumed right behind us with the Dyson...EVERY room she almost filled the canister with dirt and pet hair...I was surprised that we had been living in such filth and not knowing it!
We took advantage of the L-N-T 20% coupon and bought one. In spite of all the Dyson-haters out there, they ARE great vacuums. My ONLY complaint is the hose for the wand. Too tightly sprung for most uses. You drag it out, and it keeps trying to collapse back to it's original length, or it pulls the vacuum to you...Other than that, it IS a good tool.

Costco would let me bring one home on a trial basis and then decide whether or not to buy it?

No, but they would let you return it if you were unsatisfied.

Another great thing about the dyson is it is so easy to take apart and clean it. Nice filter as well.

The whole thing just works so well. It's a masterpiece in easy of use. The powered attachment works wonders on furniture as well.

My Dyson has broken three times so far. Fortunately I got the extended warranty from Sears. Unfortunately it takes them a month to fix it every time. Oh by the way, Sears customer service/telephone menu hell is diabolical.

I paid around $500 for it.

I figure that was oh...about $500 too much.

Threw it away and bought a $125 Hoover - hasn't broken yet.

PRICE BREAK $99

We have this one as well, no filters at all to replace and this thing really has some suck power. I never owned something that sucks as much as this one does. It sucks this, it sucks that, it sucks and sucks and not once has it given a lick of trouble.

No bags, no filters, just fills up with hair from 1 cat, and 4 dogs, go dump it and your ready to go. Save $300 and get it ;)

My family is exceptionally hard on vacuums, it seems. We've had all kinds of vacuums... Dirt Devils, Wind Tunnels, etc. Our most recent vacuum is a Dyson... and it's been going strong for a couple of years, without any indication of having a problem.

hows the dyson on hardwood floors? I've got all hardwood floors, but i stilll get tons of dirt and junk (from the cat). I hate the swiffer, and didnt like the Irobot stuff. Would a dyson be a better hcoice?

Best Buy is carrying a Shark brand which is identical to the design of one of the Dyson models for around $200.

I saw a Shark branded "cyclonic" vacuum at target today. Felt rather chintsy though, not as solid as the Dyson.

Well, I just spent almost $600 of a dyson today. And it is not even here, I have to wait for it to be delivered.

I looked around and all the base prices for the DC15 Animal were $599.99.

LNT had it for $699.99 then $100.00 off, so i called my local store and they said they had TWO in stock. So, I drove there and they did not have any. My only option was to have it delivered for $50. I wanted to take it home right then, so checked Home Depot, Sams Club and Best Buy. HD and Sams did not have the DC15 Animal model. BB did but it was $600.00 plus tax. The b/f was starving and getting all grumpy and was saying that he didn't give a shite if I spent $1,000 ... he just wanted to go and eat.

iamwiz82 was kind enough to point me in the direction of a LNT 20% off coupon so I tried to use that. I was caught in a quandry though because that was for IN STORE purchases ONLY and LNT computer showed that the DC15 Animal was INTERNET ORDER ONLY. Well, I got a bit pissed off, as I was really feeling like I was getting the run around... but the manager was really nice and used a different coupon that allowed me the 20% off. There was nothing he could do about the shipping charge.

So, in the end, I got the DC15 Animal for $567.09 and it will ship tomorrow, might get here by the end of the week.

I cannot believe I laid out that kind of money when I have two working dirt devils.

My next purchase will be a television to replace the one I have. It is 55in HD, so I need to read up on the difference between DLP, Plasma and LCD. Maybe I should just not feed the b/f until I make that purchase, since he cares about nothing but food when he is hungry.

I bought this a couple weeks ago and my wife loves it. I forgot which forum I read it in, and I have no idea if it's true or not, but a quite a few people said this actaully is a Dyson. Apparently they let one of their early patents expire and Hoover bought the patent.

EDIT: Ahh, here it is, huge thread over at fatwallet about it: LINK
