I already have a Fire on pre-order but now I am driving myself crazy trying to decide what to get. I already have an iPad 2 but I don't like to read books with it because of the size. I also want one for google reader and tapatalk.

If you're an Amazon Prime member/customer, get the Fire, if not, get the nook.

If you really want to read on a portable device, get one of the e-ink devices, the $79 Kindle is a good deal.

I am a prime member but decided on the Nook for the wife. The measly 6 gigs of on board storage that is not expandable is a deal breaker. She will use the tablet a lot out WiFi of range so it makes the decision an easy one. Nook tablet for her.

You already have an iPad but now need another tablet because it's 30% smaller? Do people need a different tablet/device for each and every use now?

I can't come up with enough reasons to by any of these, let alone several of them, since I have several perfectly good computers. But good thing someone is working on strengthening the economy I guess..

Just keep in mind, that 79 dollar Kindle is ad subsidized. Spend a little extra money, Nook Simple Touch is now just 99.

Since you have Prime, you'll get free streaming video and 1 free Kindle book loan a month (from a limited list). You can also use Amazon's android app store and the paid stores for books, music and videos.

For $20 / year you can upload all of your MP3s and DRM-free iTunes songs to Cloud Drive to stream to Amazon's players (on multiple devices not just the Fire).

Note that the Fire does not include a mic or camera so no skype calls.

If you only want books, the e-ink Kindles are worth looking at too. I have an older Kindle 2 model and for just reading books it's excellent.

Plus they also sell the Nook Touch refurbs at quite the discount. They were $80 not too long ago when new was selling for $130, so I'm not sure what they'd go for now.

Nook Touch can be rooted to run most Android apps without issue, best of which is the Amazon app. Now I don't believe using an app you can make use of the new Prime features for Kindle, but you can still view Kindle AND Nook books on one device that way.

Why does this crap keep coming up? The screen save is an ad and at the very bottom of the home page a small little banner is an ad. Really not an issue plus some of the "ads" are free things for you. $99 will also buy a kindle touch although that is also with special offer/ads how horrible. If you want a nook fine but don't make it out like the kindle has ads popping up while you are in the middle of reading on it.

Strictly speaking tablet use, I would love a new Nook Tablet. All the comparisons I have read/listened to are so hung up on the Nook being $50 more. But you get something for that $50, a lot actually. IPS Screen, SD Card Slot, Double the onboard storage, double the onboard memory.

The ads really aren't a big deal - its on the screensaver and home page, not when you're actually reading. And if you really hate ads for one reason or another, you can get it without them for $109.

Anyway, regarding the tablets, if you have Prime, the Fire is a better deal with streaming. Also, if you don't plan on rooting/roming your tablet, from what I've seen, I personally think the Fire has a better stock experience. If you want something more powerful/customizable, get the Nook tablet.

the question is, do you need those?

you can store a lot of books on 8GB. and it's not meant for digital hoarders, but people who need a few books/songs or a movie during the morning commute on the train. you can always add/remove data on the go via wifi

Again, purely from a tablet standpoint. In that case hell yes, need for sure. The IPS screen on the original nook color was fracking awesome compared to every other tablet screen I had seen.

If I'm going to read books, it would be on an e-ink or paper, but that's just me.

I thought the Fire had an IPS screen as well. No?

I can't wait to compare both in person. I'm leaning toward the Nook. The only thing that bothers me about it is that silly open corner. What is that for, to clip the thing on your keychain or something? I know, I know- it's a silly, purely aesthetic detail, but still...

From the same purely aesthetic standpoint, the Fire just looks sturdier and a more serious device. But of course I'll have to wait and see in person if that's actually the case.

By the way- did I dream it, or was there actually a $250 Kindle Fire with 3G? I could swear I saw that on Amazon's site, but now there's no mention. If I were to go with the Fire, that was what I was thinking I would go with.

After looking around more, maybe it does? I read one review and listened to one podcast that reviewed it, both saying it was an off the shelf TN panel. But Google shows otherwise.

A little closer then.

Kindle Fire definitely has an IPS display.

B&N talked about Nook Tablet's display having no gap between the glass and screen. And how it'll have less glare and reflections. But I'm not sure if this is special or just marketing talk.

But one thing that really bugged me about the Nook Color glass is it didn't have any oleophobic coating. Finger prints were difficult to wipe off and it didn't feel as smooth as most tablets and phones do. Hopefully the Nook Tablet doesn't make the same mistake.

- I really wish the Fire had a mic/headphone jack..

One of the main reasons I want to get a tablet is for travel (lightweight/portable). I want to use the headphone to listen to music/movies and mic for making calls

- I really wish Nook hooked into the droid app store (Google)

What to do..

If the Nook Tablet is as easy to root and hack as the Nook Color, you'll be able to get the android app store on there in under 5 minutes.

I know, I have a Kindle Touch pre ordered specifically for getting the ads...

Prime video streaming pretty much sucks, so I don't think I'd even consider that a selling point for me, personally. I'm a Prime member, and I've never once watched anything from their library. I have a Vizio TV that supports Amazon, Netflix and Hulu Plus, and I've used the latter two quite a bit. Amazon doesn't have enough in the archives to make me cancel Netflix, nor enough (free/included) TV to get me off of Hulu. Remember, the Prime free streaming is a subset of their video library - not everything, and the newer stuff still costs money.

As far as Fire or Nook, I'm very happy with my NC running CM7 so I'm sticking with that. I'll skip this generation and wait for the next.

For a second there I thought you were saying the Fire had no headphone jack- that would render it virtually useless.
