Do whatever makes you happy.
You'll need to be at a min 1:1 FSB (if you have an intel chipset mobo) of 445FSB to reach 4GHz, im sure that ram can get to 890DDR w/ a small voltage bump.. or maybe no bump.

WoW. Amber FTW..I think I'll take some of that cake then..

Whats up with Fry's lately? They are having some killer deals.

Good ram you would say?

I'm pretty much ok with any DDR2-800 that can do 5-5-5-18 or tighter at the standard 1.8V, so I would say yes. But if you're looking at OCing, then from what I hear, the C4 version of this would be better (but also more expensive, mind you...).

Disclaimer: I don't own that kit myself. I wouldn't hesitate to get it though, if I were in the market for more RAM.

Man Amber...I was about to jump and then I read the C4 vs C5 Debates. I don't pretend to know anything about overclocking at this moment.

even with the C5 I should be able to overclock the E8400 quite a bit?

It's not the CAS latencies themselves, it's whether or not the CAS 4 kit has higher quality memory chips that would allow higher frequencies/OCs.

Anyways, worst case scenario, say you can't up the RAM frequency at all -- Assuming the RAM is the limiting factor, you'd be able to get to 400x9 = 3.6Ghz on the E8400. (where 400 is 800MHz / 2 data rate, and 9 is the multiplier on the E8400)

Someone let me know if I have those numbers wrong...I don't necessarily know the FSB and multi of the Wolfdales off the top of my head.

I think I might hold off..I can wait until mid febuary to buy the RAM. From what I have been researching the C5's do not overclock well at ALL

Your other options would be to get DDR2-1066. Or get a 2x1GB kit of DDR2-800. The 2x2GB kits don't seem to OC as well.

Well I'm just running XP pro for now.. Getting some higher quality 2x1 I guess wouldn't be SUCH a bad idea..although 4gb sounded good:)

I don't particularly like rebates.
I also don't like Corsair since they bin so aggressively that nothing they put out ever OCs well unless it's the very top of the [overpriced] line.

So in response to your PM, no i wouldn't get that Corsair for use with an E8400, since you'll want something with a little headroom.

Safest bet is this DDR2-1000 kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231145

Mushkins always OC at least somewhat, & these should do well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146731

The latest kits do well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231122

Well Guys,

In the end I decided on getting a 2x1gb kit (which So I'm told are better for OC then a 2x2

G.Skills 46.99 DDR-800

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231098

Guess they use powerchips or something.

Most people said they were pretty good. I was going to go the route for XMS2 but these appear to be pretty nice.

And if I need more RAM later, well I don't plan on going Vista 64bit until I upgrade my MOBO/CPU anyways with a Nahelem (or w/e)

Good choice?

I only need DDR 890 for my 4ghz mark on my 8400 (I don't really care to push it any further)

So in the end you opt'd for what could potentially lead to a better OC rather then having more memory for a better system (potentially).

2x as much memory, (115/94=1.22=22% price premium) for a 22% :)( ) premium to keep 2 slots open.
Hmm, no rebate... order 2 (or should I say, order another one as you've already ordered). It puts more stress on the NB/MCH, so add a little more voltage to the NB, boo hoo. Did you upgrade to this new cpu to OC or did you upgrade to this new comptuer to use it?

Well,

RAM is cheap enough right now that I could actually afford to just buy another 2x2 kit if I really needed it. And Like I said I have absolutely NO reason to upgrade to Vista. I only have XP Pro 32. Maybe One day I'll upgrade, but that will be a little bit from now. As it would appear people on ebay still pay the newegg price for that RAM kit I bought even if its used. So very very worse case scenario is that I sell it for the price I paid and buy another kit.

I'm making this rig for dual purpose. Yes I plan to actually use it, but I also plan to learn from building and and learn from overclocking it. So in the end, maybe I caused myself a little bit of undue hassle. But Seeing as how my system wouldn't even see the full 4gb's and the fact that XP does not really benefit going from 2gbs and over there is no point.
