Put it this way:

When microwaves first came out no one wanted it. Then with in 5 years, everyone has one in their home.

Its a must.

I pretty much use mine to call long distance and not much else. I hate people who bring cells to class and they ring in the middle of class, or people who talk on them non-stop. Those are two negatives to phones in general. They are handy though.

I hate cell phones.... I have one only because I'm locked into the contract. At first I thought it was great, but once I started seeing these stupid people driving, walking, in the mall, in the grocery store on their phones, I basically got turned off, really fast.

Emergencies are about the only real use for them.....

All the pro's are listed, it's very useful. The thing I hate about it is that people can get in touch with you nonstop. And some people, like me don't use the phone much so it wouldnt serve much use.

Plus if people find out your cellphone number, they would keep calling you." i was wtf i just want a freaking cellphone

You only need a cell phone if YOU decide you need to have one. One with a calling plan (so many minutes a month) costs plenty every single month if you happen to be at a point in life where you don't bring much in. That said, it's nice to have one if you're trying to meet up with someone, if you're running late, or if you need to call a tow truck.

If you DO decide to get one, and want to save some money get a pre paid one, such as AT&T Free2Go, or Virgin Mobile (essentially pre-paid Sprint PCS, available at Target), and use it very rarely. Only turn it on when you want to make a call, or if you're expecting a call from someone you've given your mobile number to. Calls you take cost the same as calls you make, so tell people to call you at home and leave a message. Of course, it's good personal protocol to always return calls with messages promptly, and, IMHO, desperation to always return ?missed calls? on the caller ID where someone DOESN?T leave a message (that?s a pet peeve of mine, because of my job and how I use my cell phone).

The biggest downside is as soon as you get one, everyone (boss, family, etc.) expects you to be reachable 24 hours a day. Fight the power!

I bought one of the Verzion Free up Cell phones I did not want a huge bill each month I do not talk on my cell much it averages me about 15 bucks a month. I use it more as a pager than a phone any way if I am at home or work and someone calls me I can see who it is and call on a land line.

If you don't think you need one, then you don't need one. Save your money for something else.

They're convenient for making a call or being reached while you're out. But if this would only happen to you 2 or 3 times per month, then just use a pay phone.

The other main advantage is if you get long-distance included in a 'national plan' -- this can be a good deal comparable to a cheap phone card if you're always calling family or girlfriend or whatever out-of-state.

Got a two-phone plan with the wife a couple of weeks ago, with the intent of cancelling the landline once we're comfy with the cellphones. So far, so good. Landline will be gone in a few days.

Pros:
- Call from most anywhere
- "Free" long distance
- No / not much telemarketing (if your state doesn't already restrict it)
- "Free" calling features (e.g. caller ID)

Cons:
- Cost is high
- Lose your phone and it's even higher
- Contract if you get one with a plan

Add to that:
- Can't send or receive a fax with your computer
- Can't get online if the cable goes out.
- High cost per minute for weekday usage and overage. You need a huge plan if you need to do any local business by phone during business hours.
- Can't order from Domino's (and if you call my favorite pizza place, they won't accept checks if you don't have a home phone).
- If you need to apply for a credit card, they might deny you based on the fact that you don't have a home phone (it's easy to see if any given phone number is a wireless number or a land line).
- If you call 911, they don't automatically know where you are. Even worse, cell phone 911 calls in my state go to the state patrol first, so if you need help at home, you need to tell them to transfer you to your local police dept, wait for that to happen, and then tell them where you are. If you can't talk at the moment, your 911 call is USELESS. Until E911 service goes live everywhere (currently, it's virtually, and all phones have E911 GPS capability, this will continue to be a problem.
- You won't get a real white and yellow pages for your area from the phone company.
- 411 calls on a cell phone often cost $1 or more.

I tried going without a land line for a few months, but the $23/mo "saved" wasn't worth the hassle. I soon re-subscribed for local service from Qwest. I don't have long distance on my home line, the cell plan is still very good for domestic LD calling. I'm happy to have both a home phone and a cell phone.
