A weeklong sting operation by a local-federal Internet crimes task force has ended with the arrest of 10 area men.
Ranging in age from their 50s to the late teen years, the men were arrested after chatting online with members of the Northwest Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force posing as minors.
?It?s very disappointing these arrests are coming so easy,? Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator said at the start of a press conference announcing the arrests. ?This should emphasize to parents to please, please get involved with what your children are doing on the Internet.?
The sweep follows last year?s task force effort, where the task force netted almost 80 alleged sex offenders.
Bossier City City Marshal Johnny Wyatt, one of the driving forces behind the task force, said the task force hopes to do better in 2007.
?One hundred to 200 people ? that?s our goal,? Wyatt said.
The arrested were:
? James Clyde Prine Jr., 52, of the 2000 block of Betty Street, Shreveport, booked Feb. 19 into the Bossier City Jail for attempted aggravated rape, two counts of computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes and indecent behavior with a juvenile.
? Milton Slocum, 42, of the 500 block of Waterford Drive, Shreveport, booked Tuesday into Caddo Correctional Center on charges of computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes, indecent behavior with juveniles and attempted possession of child pornography. Slocum, a vascular surgeon, made the news earlier this week as the first announced arrest of the sting.
? Joshua Mills, 23, of the 4200 block of state Highway 111, Anacoco, arrested Tuesday by the Vernon Parish sheriff?s office as a fugitive from the Webster Parish sheriff?s office on charges of obscenity, computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes and indecent behavior of a juvenile.
? Sean Richardson, 20, of the 8100 block of Beechwood Drive in Urania, booked Wednesday into the Shreveport City Jail on charges of attempted oral sexual battery, attempted indecent behavior with a juvenile and computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes.
? Chris Gordy, 31, of the 13000 block of Shady Oaks Lane in Keithville, booked Wednesday into Caddo Correctional Center as a fugitive from the Webster Parish sheriff?s office on charges of computer aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes, indecent behavior with a juvenile and obscenity. Gordy also was arrested on two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and two counts of computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes in Caddo Parish.
? Timothy Bond, 31, of the 1000 block of Jason Drive in Denham Springs, booked Thursday into Caddo Correctional Center for computer?aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes and possession of a schedule IV dangerous substance.
? Henry Harvey, 36, of the 400 block of Debbie Street in Kilgore, Texas, booked Thursday into the Gregg County Jail as a fugitive from Bossier Parish sheriff?s office on two counts of obscenity, two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile, and two counts of computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes.
? James Burwell Cater, 19, of the 14000 block of Todd Road in Maumelle, Ark., surrendered Friday to the Webster Parish sheriff?s office on two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and computer-aided solicitation for sexual purposes.
? Tarun Kansal, 24, of the 300 block of South Homer Street in Ruston, booked Friday into the Bossier City Jail for attempted aggravated rape, indecent behavior with a juvenile and computer-aided solicitation of a minor for sexual purposes.
? Lance Haase, 51, of the 3200 block of Restview Street in Longview, Texas, booked Friday by the Longview Police Department as a fugitive from the Webster Parish sheriff?s office on two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and two counts of obscenity.
Agencies involved in the task force include the Caddo, Webster and Bossier parish sheriff?s offices, the Bossier City Marshals office, the Shreveport and Bossier City police departments; the Bossier Parish District Attorney?s office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service.
The joint effort means people who allegedly commit a crime in one jurisdiction can be arrested in another with minimum red tape. Several of the arrests over the last week were in regional towns for incidents in other parishes or across state lines.
Officials said a percentage of such offenders successfully commit acts with minors before they are finally caught.
So people who believe they or their children have been victims of these men should call the respective law agency. Investigation into such reports could lead to further charges against the men arrested, Prator said.
Officials think their actions may have prevented crimes extending beyond sex offenses.
Prator noted that one of the men arrested ?showed up with over 40 condoms, tape and a rope.? Prator said the man expressly showed up to meet a supposed 30-year-old woman and her minor daughter ?after explicitly stating what he wanted to do to the daughter.?
Wyatt noted that the victims of such sex offenders include their own families, who are numbed by the arrest of a father, son or brother, and have to cope with a flood of emotions and publicity following the arrest.
?We?re making arrests, and it?s devastating these families,? he said. ?Sometimes the family has no idea.?
He said task force members leave literature and contact information on agencies that can help families cope with the arrest.
Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton said the sting should send a clear message to offenders and families.
?One, don?t mess with our children, and two, don?t mess with our senior citizens,? he said. ?And it shows we have to get our families, our parents, involved.?
