make sure you come back soon
Effective January 8, 2007, anyone traveling by air, land or sea to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda will be required to have a passport to re-enter the United States.

Will I be able to get to Canada and come back to the US with any other combination of ID or am I screwed?

You probably can. I cross the border at least 3 times a year (used to do it weekly) and I would never try. If you get stuck on the other side and you can't get back into your own country, then you will have a real problem.

A family emergency is a family emergency, but your passport is among the most important documents you possess. Have to keep better track of it.

Immigration laws are irrelevant. It is entirely upto the discretion of the border crossing agent. I have found the only times the laws are applied consistantly is when they are trying to penalize you.

Coming back from Montreal over the summer the US customs official was asking us if we visited all these strip clubs and how his buddy owns a bar downtown. *shrugs*

Back in July I took some vacation time to go see some friends in Buffalo, NY. I crossed at the Blue Water Bridge that connects Port Huron, MI to Sarnia, Ontario. I was never asked for ID coming in or going back out. Of course I had it ready just in case.

I was the only one in the car and it was mid day so the customs officers could plainly look inside.

A passport will not be required until 2008 BY LAND. If by air, get back before the 8th of jan.

If you have family there, then you may want to go ahead and get one.
