No. Refurbed iPods are cheaper.

269 for refurb 20 gb, with tax i'm looking @ around $300

Do you really need 20 gigs?

yes, i want to use it as a HDD and a psuedo external HDD

Well then I say go for it. If you were just using it as an mp3 player (primarily I should say) then I would get the Ipod.

from the reviews i read, the zen has better sound quality than the ipod

i would have a had time justifying spending $125 more on a mp3 player that sounds worse than a $175 one

The Ipod has excellent sound quality. I guarantee you that you would be more than satisfied with it. It is just as good as anything I've ever heard. Either way, I don't want to get into an argument between the Ipod and Zen, so I'll just leave it at that.

i dont want to get in an argument, but i just want to know which is better. i'm sure the ipod has good sound quality but if there is something better out there, i would pick it over the ipod. here is the conclusion from an online review:

I think the Zen NX is the best jukebox on the market - at least among the models I've used. The iPod is cooler looking and smaller, but it is overpriced and doesn't sound nearly as good. The iRiver has more features, is smaller, and sounds great, but has a small drive and is hella expensive. The RCA has a bigger drive and is nicely priced, but doesn't sound as good and has only a fraction of the features. While the NX has weak spots they are acceptable considering the high points. It sounds outstanding, has a large drive, is loaded with features, and is affordable.

It's worth it yes. If you don't mind the size (seems small enough for me) it's worth it. Whether you should buy it is up to you. But it's a good deal for a quality electronic item.
