To buy or not to buy opteron

I have been waiting for the AMD64 chips for a while, and judging by the performance of AMD's server chips in gaming (which will most likely be used for the FX chip), do you think it would be a good time to buy now? I was just wondering how you guys felt on it.... i could buy all this stuff now for around 600 bucks (chip and mobo) and then of course, new ECC ram....

just wondering, oh and i might as well ask, how do u guys feel about the rumors that amd will make us buy all new mobos if we want the new 939 pin chips this winter?

anyway, thanks dudes

they have great gaming performance
but I would wait till the release date and the official prices to make any decisions

I live in san diego so i might wait for the san diego core next year if it's good
by then prices should be low

but yeah if the opteron pricing is competitive with the P4 it would be a good path to go from what the benchmarks in previews seem to be showing

im waiting for athlon 64 fx personally.. cheaper, supposedly higher clocks, and uses dual channel ddr400 .. 🙂

Im waiting. i was going to hop an as im just upgrading from a p1 166. But the cost is too high. i just figured i will wait for 64. I ended up getting a amd dually. i got 2 1700 b's. (shoud have gotten 2 2500's) but it all came about to 600.oo or so for the full rig. I plan on getting a 64bit laptop once they hit the street and just use the dually at home.

I was gonna but a 140 till i found out how awful they are at overclocking. I thought I could get 2 on water but aparently not. If I were you, id wait for the 939 pin model and then get it. If you need a comp now or are tired of waiting, wait till sept 23rd and then but an opteron 144 as they will surely go down in price.

140s are Rev B processors. 2.0 ghz and above are Rev C processors, hence better overclockers. All indications I've seen from leaked A64 cpuid shots suggest that they are rev c (stepping 8).

after seeing anand's new review on the athlon64 and nforce3.... i may have to hold off on my much needed upgrade and get this setup instead.. looks VERY promising 😀

Ya might also want to wait for reviews of the VIA chipset for A64. VIA claims to have resolved a problem with noise on the hypertransport links that have limited other mobo makers to 1.2gig. VIA claims to be running the hypertransport links at full rated speed of 1.6gig.
