Dell.ca has free shipping on (goto software & peripherals NOT handhelds). In that section the Axim is 10% off too (all handhelds are) but if you goto the handhelds section off the main page they AREN'T on sale. Go figure 🙂 It works to $293 CAN/$213 US with free shipping for the 300 MHz X-Scale edition with Pocket PC 2003 Premium.

Anyhow what do you guys think about its 32 RAM & 32 ROM Good deal? I want to use it for many things. WiFi access outside on summers days. Reading html based books (college tuition gives access to tons of them at school). And even streaming video from my desktop to it. Perhaps I could play the video on the desktop but remote desktop view it from the handheld so DivX decodes on the main rig but streams to the handheld? Is this feasible (or can the Axim's power decode DivX?) I don't have an MP3 player so paired with a SecureDigital card it would serve that purpose too. Regular stuff like taking notes, agenda, todo list also.

Seems many apps are geared towards ARM and MIPS not X-Scale processor...is there any idea where this is heading? I've heard people make fun of X-Scale :\

Oh and I was reading about Linux on Axim recently but it seemed that it was using the CompactFlash memory card to do this. Any idea if you can do it with the SD memory card? I wanna keep the CompactFlash free for WiFi.

Thanks a million for any help

32 RAM and 32 ROM seems decent enough, especially considering it has 2 slots that can be used for memory. Keep in mind there are 64 MB RAM models out there and 128 MB is going to be the next standard.

I have never been able to successfully watch movies over any remote desktop program yet. I'm not sure if its possible to do what you're saying, but I know there are people who encode DIVX movies for the Pocket PC.

Yea I used to use my iPaq for MP3s too, so it is nice for that.

Linux on it, I have no idea... I don't like linux that much and I don't see why you'd want it that badly on an Axim while having it stay functional.

Well, I have the 400MHz 64MB RAM Dell, and I love it. As for the 300MHz 32MB, it seems like a good enough setup. I have noticed that even with 64MB RAM, it's not enough sometimes. If I were you, I'd consider spending a little extra and get the 64MB version. Either that, or be very mindful of what you need it for. If it's for wireless access, making notes, keeping reminders, listening to mp3's, then no problems. But if you plan to install a lot of apps, play movies on it, etc., you'll need the extra storage. I have found that I can stream divx movies from my home PC to my Axim, but the divx has to be encoded at a small enough bit rate, etc. to not be too taxing on the wireless connection. I think I encoded my video around 128kbps, and used MPEG Layer 3 for audio encoding (which is basically MP3 encoding). I started out making it this way to fit on my 256MB SD card, but then realized I could also stream it over my wireless network from my home server. aximsite.com and pocketmatrix.com forums have all the info you need on how to encode in divx for the pocket pc. You'll need virtualdub, the divx codec, and pocketMVP (aka pocketdivx) to play the divx on your Axim.

As for Linux on the AXIM, I have no idea. With X-Scale, the new version of pocket PC (2003) supports x-scale optimizations. That means that vendors will (hopefully) start releasing patches for their applications that will take advantage of the x-scale processor's power. So, in time, x-scale will be faster / more efficient in running these certain applications that fully support the x-scale. It's kind of like SSE2 for the P4, in a way.

Does Pocket PC 2003 support Windows XP's Remote Desktop Sharing?

Oh yea, forgot to say that rumours from brighthand have stated that Dell will have a wireless capable Axim as early as this year. Don't have the link, but check out www.brighthand.com or www.pdabuzz.com for that info. Might make you want to hold off a little.
