To Build A Fire

I'm gonna have to verify this with Michelle Bachmann.

But, I'm a Bear Grylls disciple, I stand by his Bear-liness.

very cool, or hot

I wonder if this is a better alternative on snow, as long as you're in a dry climate. Most of the flames are above the ground

Very nice. Just learned something new to impressed the ladies. Not that it matters... But just in case I go camping, I can build that.

looks very handy. I bet you could separate the pieces and put it out, and relight it later.

Yes charred wood is definitely easier to get going.
Reverse fires (start from the top) indeed are good when the ground is wet or has standing water/snow on it.

If you cut out the center and cut out a little hole at the bottom of a couple of the pieces, then you can strap them together. Probably make it easier to carry around, and a lot more stable if you want to cook something on it.

The concept is the same, often in a pickle one has to improvise especially what may be given on a whim when ultimately survival is the goal.

Thanks for the post Rubycon, as soon as I saw the setup, I recognized it but, never heard of it referred to as a Swedish torch before. He did pretty good his first time around but, he put the kindling in upside down in order. He got it going anyways which is what count. 🙂

Yes the portability of this kit is interesting. Never really thought about having to move the fire, but it's doable with this!

Thanks Rubycon but did notice one thing... The wood is pine...? One thing to note about this is the black smoke which can taint the food...😛 Should also work with hardwoods if not to green...? Pretty cool though...😉

Interesting. It's very economical with wood. He loses points for dirtying a bowl at the end. That's what the pot's for :^D

The only thing is that looks like a very hot fire. Looks like a great way to boil water or cook a steak in a frying pan or do a stir fry, but might be too hot for a lot of other stuff.

Cool, but isin't a regular fire easier? Guess that has the advantage you can set the pot right on top and don't need something to hold it, though. And there's the portability aspect.

Harder to build a conventional fire on snowpack or flooded grounds. 😉
Also this rules in high winds.
