They are jacking up the monthly fee for cable modem users to 46 bucks a month, just thought I'd let everyone know to hear some venting and figure out what we can do. This will take effect on June 1st.

You have precisely two options:

1) Pay it & continue receiving broadband, or
2) Not pay it, have your account closed, & go back to dialup.

@home is a service provider. Believe it or not there are costs associated with providing that service. Their goal is to make money. So naturally they will find the perfect balance between price & sales volume, charging exactly what the market will bear. If people are unwilling to pay or can't afford it, they won't buy it.

Plain & simple.

Now quit your whining.

er, only $46/mo? I heard on the radio it will be going UP $40/mo, or whatever.. which is a hell of a lot different. (I have at&t RoadRunner..)

that would make my total somewhere around $80/mo which is getting kinda high for the type of service they provide. If it didn't cut out every 20 minutes for a minute or so, I'd be MUCH happier with it.

All in all, I can't complain though. Can't get much else, and even $80/mo is a good deal for almost-T1-like speeds at home.

Since this is off topic I guess I have the option of "whining" but anyway, I think its ridiculous that Pac Bell/SBC is raising DSL prices to 50 bucks a month and all this while Northpoint just went bankrupt and there's less competition to worry about and while costs have gone down 30-40 percent for DSL, I don't know about cable. I think this is plain out retarded and its starting to become an oligopoly, just really really frustrated...

I do not work for @home, I do not have @home, & cannot even GET @home. It's simple economics, though.

AT&T has 1.3 million customers, multiply that by 6, that's freaking 7.8 million dollars, multiply that by another 12, about 94 million dollars, freaking bastards.

I hear the buzz of dial up in my future :( , 24hr fast access sure is nice but I am not sure I can justify the cost! It has been border line at $40. Now I think the end is near.

NOT TRUE. There are 2 more:

3) Switch to another competing company that provides either Cable or DSL at a lower price.
4) If competing companies aren't available in your area, call them up and tell them you are not satisfied with your current service and would switch to theirs if they become available.

Its about competition. Free Market Economy. If enough people do number 3 or 4 then @Home will be forced to lower prices again to keep business.

at&t ran this promo last summer for $20/month cable, it was advertised in the midwest. it was for new users only and i'm pretty sure the deal runs for only 6 months then goes back to regular price.

it was nice. i had two other roommates for a while and i split it up, 7 bucks and change per PC.

edit/ damn it, i meant 6.

I always thought the prices should come down after awhile. Maybe we need AMD running a broadband service. We would all have 10 megabits lines in no time and at a affordable price as well.

welp, im cancelling it.

but not because of the jack, im moving and getting netplex dsl instead. same cost, more reliable (i cant count the number of times when my mail server wasnt available, or our dns was not working properly)... not quite as fast download, but better upload speeds.

Boy am I glad AT&T sold out the local cable company here to Insight Communications a few months ago. I'll have to find out if Insight is going to raise their @Home cable modem fees.
